Recap / Bull S 3 E 6 Fool Me Twice

Go To

Marissa's husband is arrested when his restaurant is burned down and an employee dies because of that.

Tropes:

  • Bittersweet Ending: The true arsonist is discovered (thanks to a little detective work from TAC), and Marissa's husband is saved from jail. However, the fact that Marissa doubted him (due to one small detail) has her husband beginning to question their relationship, openly asking if he can trust her.
  • Insurance Fraud: The real arsonist is a chef who needed his share of the insurance money to start a restaurant of his own.
  • Mood Whiplash: The episode starts with Marissa and her husband having a nice night together, clearly enjoying the restaurant and being in love. Then the scene cuts to Morales as he's cleaning, and shows how he died.
  • Red Herring: The victim, a cleaner named Morales, was a noted smoker who'd gotten in trouble in the past for smoking on the job. At first, it seems possible that the fire was an accident (as it's theorized that, had Morales been smoking before his shift, a bit of hot ash could have caught on something). However, that's when it's revealed that the source of the fire was the uncleaned grease trap, which makes the owner look guilty of negligence.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: The man who allegedly cleaned the restaurant's grease trap is never seen, and most of what TAC learns about him comes from his former employer. However, it's shown that the chef paid him off so that he wouldn't do the job right, leading to a buildup that ignited the fire and killed the employee.
  • Start My Own: A restaurant's chef burned down his employer's restaurant as part of a plot to start his own.
