Recap / Bones S 6 E 3 The Maggots In The Meathead

Go To

The remains of a "Guido" are discovered long after the deceased was last seen partying on the Jersey Shore. During the investigation, Brennan puts her knowledge of pop culture to the test, not knowing that the "documentary" she claims to have recently seen was actually the reality show Jersey Shore. Meanwhile, Hannah meets the rest of the team and Angela tries to hide her pregnancy.

Tropes

  • Accidental Murder: The Villain of the Week ends up being the guy in charge of delivering ice, who was constantly bullied by the "Guidos" over how ice should be free. One day he snapped and ended up hitting Richie on the head harder than intended.
  • Catfight: A thrashy fight between two girls breaks out at the club, just as Brennan and Booth are discussing the possibility of one of the girls being the murderer.
  • Dresses the Same: One of the Red Herring Booth and Brennan pursue is a fight Richie had with one of his friends over them wearing the same shirt for a party.
  • Hidden Depths: The doorman Terror enjoys Billy Elliot, which he took his mother to see at the time of the murder much to Booth's surprise.
  • Hunk: Richie was one hunk of a man that apparently liked to walk around shirtless to show off his muscles, hence his nickname "The V". Cam is even surprised at how little body fat his body had.
  • Internal Reveal: Cam and Booth end up finding out that Angela is pregnant, which was already known to the audience.
  • Joisey: Bones' anthropological fascination with the Jersey Shore series comes in handy when the case of the week takes place there.
  • Leet Lingo: Sweets has to translate the text messages between Richie and his contacts because they're all written like this, and neither Booth nor Brennan could make sense of it.
  • Lower-Class Lout: The episode explores the "Guido" culture, and Brennan herself said she followed the TV "documentary" on them.
  • Mama Bear: The Victim of the Week's mother is extremely overprotective and furious to find out her son was murdered. In his backstory, it's also mentioned the reason he never went back to steroids is due to his mother finding out and "putting the fear of god" on him.
  • The Immodest Orgasm: Booth and Hannah are both apparently extremely loud in bed, with Booth joking that now that they're out of Afghanistan "there are no bombs to drown them out".
  • Post-Coital Collapse: One scene cuts to Booth and Hannah collapsing on the bed right after finishing having sex, with both panting loudly and each wrapped up in their own Modesty Bedsheet.
  • Shout-Out:
    • The whole episode is a big one to Jersey Shore, with Brennan even having watched the show In-Universe, but mistaking it for a documentary.
    • When Richie's Best Friend learns of Richie's death, he falls to his knees and screams, "Richie!", mirroring the end of La Bamba.
  • Unusual Euphemism: Richie called a girl a "Grenade", meaning an overweight undesirable woman that someone must jump on as a wingman so the friend gets the pretty girl.
