Recap / Bones S 4 E 14 The Hero In The Hold

Go To

Booth becomes the latest victim of the Gravedigger after being knocked out, drugged, and entombed inside a toy-like yellow submarine on a ship destined to be scuttled soon. While in the process of escaping the ship, he finds himself face to face with someone from his military past. Meanwhile, the team works on locating Booth and finding who is behind the kidnapping, with the help of Booth's brother Jared. Agent Perotta also appears.

Tropes

  • Badass in Distress: Former Army Ranger and FBI Special Agent Seely Booth is kidnapped by the Gravedigger.
  • Bottle Episode: Booth spends the majority of his side of the episode trapped within a ship rigged with scuttling charges.
  • Dead Person Conversation: Booth sees and gets assistance from his dead army buddy (who happens to be his son Parker's namesake).
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Jared ultimately makes up for his past failures as Booth's brother by using his contacts to help the team find crucial evidence even when it would end his career.
  • The "I Love You" Stigma: When Booth talks to the ghost of an old army friend he tells him he loved his girlfriend Claire but couldn't tell her cause he felt they were too young, his last request is that Booth tell her and his finding her at his grave is one of the signs he wasn't a hallucination.
  • If I Wanted You Dead...: Basically brought up when the team have the Gravedigger captive; trying to make her talk, the squints all openly reflect on how they are probably the only people alive who could find a way to kill someone and guarantee they'd get away with it as they know how to avoid leaving evidence.
  • Maybe Magic, Maybe Mundane: Was Booth’s friend Teddy a hallucination from Booth being concussed, drugged and in a stressful situation — or was he a ghost? The episode has Brennan see him when Booth isn't there, implying the latter.
  • Our Ghosts Are Different: When Booth is trapped on a ship set to explode, he's reunited with Corporal Teddy Parker, the dead guy he named his son after. Teddy is 100% tangible and picks up stuff, helps Booth open doors, Booth physically picks him up... but disappears just as Booth gets rescued. Later, Brennan (who sees him later, but doesn't know the guy's identity) points out that some of the stuff Booth did to get out really did require two people. An odd episode to be sure. In-universe, Booth was drugged (though this is not confirmed by anyone other than himself) and it's later established that he has a hallucination-causing brain tumor but still, you can read it as you like.
  • Paranormal Episode: The Gravedigger trapped Booth in an old naval vessel and he saw his late friend, Parker. Brennan seemed to see him too at one point.
  • Real After All: Seems to be the case with Teddy being a real ghost as opposed to Booth hallucinating, as during the cemetery scene at the end of the episode Brennan also sees and speaks with him, although she doesn't know who he really is and doesn't mention it to Booth.
  • Stuff Blowing Up: Wait, why is the ship exploding that spectacularly? Oh, because it's cool.
  • Take That!: Teddy really doesn't like the names Cutter, Tanner, or Sebastian.
