Tropes

  • Adorably Precocious Child: Christine rips your heart out by walking in and announcing "Ready! Uncle Sweets and Daisy said they'd take me to the park today!" wearing a little backpack.
  • Bittersweet Ending: The team pays a tribute to Sweets with the song "Coconut", his favorite, as they scatter his ashes.
  • Dead Person Conversation: Invoked by Daisy when she studies Sweets's bones. She discovers that he must have played soccer as a child, and still has remodelled fractures from the time he fell out of his treehouse.
Daisy: It's like we get one last conversation.
  • Double-Meaning Title: Refers both to the shock of Sweets’ death and his first name being Lance and the others deeply caring for him. It also refers to the broken rib that pierced his aorta and killed him, a literal lance to the heart.
  • Important Hair Cut: After Brennan chews Booth out for wanting to murder Sanderson, he cleans up his act, putting his suit back on and shaving his beard.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: Brennan talks about how Sweets is still with them, not in a religious sense, but in the sense that he affected their lives and who they are now, citing examples such as she might not be married to Booth or have gotten pregnant with Christine without him shipping them so hard, let alone gotten Daisy pregnant.
  • Meaningful Funeral: Sweet's wake/funeral was very moving but also rather quirky.
  • Non-Answer: Booth gives a non-committal reply when Brennan asks him if he bought his new weapons legally.
  • Villain Has a Point: Durant is correct that the founding fathers hated democracy; the Constitution was written in response to people participating in direct democracy under the Articles of Confederation, and "tyranny of the majority" referred to their fear that the poor would come after the economic elites. Thus, it's easy for someone to consider himself a true patriot and subvert democracy to guarantee rule by elites.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: When Brennan walks in on Booth cleaning weapons, planning on murdering Sanderson, she gives him an epic rectal opening.
