Recap / Bob's Burgers S4E9 "Slumber Party"

Go To

A completely reluctant Louise is shanghaied into having a sleepover, while Linda deals with a raccoon coup in the back alley.

Troper Party:

  • Anti-Climax: Louise sends Jodi packing by exploiting her germaphobia, and sends Harley packing by spinning a wild tale about Gene's (fake) Evil Twin who has a taste for human flesh. How does she send Abby packing? Simply say she won't let her braid her hair.
  • Apologetic Attacker: Gene is told to play the role of the "annoying brother" by Linda, which he accomplishes by pulling Jodi's hair. Gene apologizes the entire time.
Gene: Um, I don't even want to do this. It's my job.
  • Awkward First Sleepover: Louise is forced into having her first sleepover by her doting mother Linda. Not only does Louise not want a sleepover in the first place, Linda makes things even worse by exclusively inviting girls Louise can't stand.
  • Big "NO!": When Linda makes plans for mother-daughter bonding attempts at the end of the episode, Louise reacts with one of these.
  • The Bore: Louise believes this about Jessica. She is very wrong.
Louise: If she were a spice, she'd be flour. If she were a book, she'd be two books.
  • Brick Joke: When the girls are tie-dyeing shirts, Gene says he's going to make "the psychedelic crop top of my dreams" before Linda tells him she didn't buy enough shirts for him to make one. During the end credits Slumber Party Fashion Show, Gene's wearing a tie-dyed crop top.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • Little King Trashmouth was first mentioned back in "Two for Tina" by Linda.
    • Ken the albino is mentioned again, although Bob doesn't remember him (and points out to Gene that he's not real when his memory is jogged).
  • Everyone Has Standards: Louise agrees to keep it a secret that Jessica wets the bed, partly out of respect and partly because teasing bed-wetters is too mean-spirited and too "Nineties" even for her.
  • Evil Twin: Louise claims Gene has one named George, who lives in the basement and is feral to the point of attacking people.
  • Hidden Depths: Louise thinks Jessica is the most bland and boring of the girls Linda invited to the sleepover, but Jessica turns out to be quite cunning and ruthless in her efforts to keep her bed-wetting a secret.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Harley genuinely believes Louise's tale of "George", Gene's monstrous twin who lives in the basement. This leads her to ask what she believes is an innocent question but is in reality an unintended diss against Louise:
Louise: And whatever you do, please do not laugh. [Harley gasps in fear] Because I laughed once, and he bit off a piece of my butt!
    Harley: What?!
Louise: That's why I'm sitting like this, because I don't have two buttcheeks to sit on—
Harley: Is that why you dance weird in dance class?
    Louise: ... Shut up, Harley.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: As rude as she is about it, Louise has every right to be annoyed that Linda forced her into having a slumber party she didn't want.
  • Madwoman in the Attic: Louise scares off Harley by claiming that Gene has a feral, hunchbacked twin brother who communicates by farting and lives in the basement.
  • Motor Mouth: Harley just likes to yammer on without listening to others, or even caring if anyone is listening to her. It's why Louise dubs her "Harley Ever-Shuts-Her-Mouth", and even Gene complains about it at one point.
  • My Beloved Smother: Linda once again tries to force Louise into doing something she thinks will be good for her. While she's sort of proven right at the end when Louise befriends Jessica, the fact remains that she still hosted the slumber party against Louise's will and solely invited girls Louise didn't want over.
  • Noodle Incident: During Jessica and Louise's pillow fight, Tina claims it's the third time she's been used as a human shield.
  • Not Me This Time: Jessica assumes Louise is hiding her wet clothes because it's part of her scheme to drive her crazy like she did to the other guests. Louise admits she wants to be messing with Jessica, but isn't.
  • Not So Above It All: Bob gets his hair braided by Abby and keeps it for the rest of the episode.
  • Only Sane Man: Once again, Bob proves he knows more about Louise than Linda does. He immediately recognizes that Louise is not going to like the slumber party, and tries to warn Linda not to go through with it (additionally, when the kids arrive, it's clear Linda gave him no warning about it). Even when he later encourages Louise to stay, it's clear he's only going along with it because he knows it's too much effort to try and convince Linda to shut it down.
Linda: If Louise would just do the things she hates, I know she'd love it!
    Bob: That sounds like nonsense.
    • Bob is also the only one to recognize that Linda shouldn't have brought Little King Trashmouth into the apartment.
  • Self-Deprecation: Gene claims that Louise's family smells.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Stating the Simple Solution: Bob implies that he would be fine taking Jessica home even without a reason (after all, he's taking the other girls home), and Tina points out that this is the easiest way to end the slumber party early, but Louise insists that she has to take care of Jessica herself.
  • Terrified of Germs: Jodi in spades, which is how Louise manages to send her home.
  • Too Much Information: Linda decides it's a good idea to talk about Ginger's cousin's psoriasis while the rest of the family is eating.
  • Troubling Unchildlike Behavior: Linda considered throwing rocks at cars a normal part of growing up. Bob is concerned.
  • Would Rather Suffer: Louise calls tie-dyeing a worse form of dying than actual dying, which she would rather do than have the slumber party.
  • Wrong Genre Savvy: Jessica initially assumes Louise is hiding the proof of her bedwetting because she's messing with her like she did to the other girls. Louise remarks that she wishes she was, but genuinely has no idea what she's talking about.
    • Linda assumes that because Louise ended up liking the slumber party at the end, she'll like all of Linda's bonding ideas and immediately makes plans to go clothes shopping. Louise's Big "NO!" indicates she's very mistaken.
