Recap / Bob's Burgers S7E18 "The Laser-inth"
aka: Bobs Burger S 7 E 18 The Laserinth

Go To

On Bob's birthday, he and Gene head for a planetarium's last laser rock show. Meanwhile, the ladies visit a doll store where Gretchen works.

The Troper-inth:

  • Birthday Episode: It's Bob's birthday (and based on previous episodes revealing Bob's age, his 45th to be exact).
  • Chekhov's Gun: Bob tells Gene how General Inzanity was defeated by the hero rolling a rock at him. Gene later uses this technique with an abandoned model of Pluto to distract a security guard so they can sneak back into the laser show.
  • Creepy Doll: Tina spends most of her screen-time in blatant fear of the dinner dolls. Louise seems to like them for this reason, though, and once she reads the backstory of one of them, she wants to save it from being shredded.
  • Expy: The plot of the laser show is very similar to We Will Rock You with the future where rock is banned and a new song is written to defeat the Big Bad.
    • The Special Girl store serves as one to the American Girl toy line.
  • Foreshadowing: When they first show up at the planetarium's front entrance, Bob and Gene are told "no ins and outs" (i.e. they can't re-enter if they leave). This naturally becomes important later on, as they leave when Gene has a panic attack but later decide to see the finale of the show.
  • Freak Out: Gene has a panic attack at the laser show.
  • Fun with Homophones: When a scalper asks if Bob and Gene have "tix" (i.e. tickets), Gene mishears it as "ticks" and describes how he doesn't have them anymore.
  • Hidden Depths: Despite mainly working as a hairdresser up until that point, Gretchen knows the exact doll accessories and the necessary hairdo to duplicate the look of the doll Louise wants to save from being shredded so that they can switch it for another one, getting Louise's praise for it.
  • I Want My Jetpack: Zentipede clearly had bold (and incorrect) predictions for the start of the 21st century, given the crux of General Inzanity's takeover revolves around a sentient robot army.
Bob: He's an evil robot army general who takes control of the government in the year 2007, which used to be a long time in the future.
  • Lethal Chef: Bob initially mistakes Linda's attempt at a muffin for his birthday breakfast as oatmeal.
Linda: Didn't bake all the way through. Still good though! It's made with love. And no flour, by accident.
  • Nightmare Face: The first thing to appear in the laser show is a demonic face, which scares Gene.
  • Noodle Incident: Gretchen has a couple:
  • One-Steve Limit: The scalper tells Bob that there are two Nicks working the concession stand, one who's cool, and one who's not, and the uncool Nick often pretends to be cool. Subverted when it turns out there is only one Nick, who often pretends to be another Nick to mess with the scalper.
  • Papa Wolf: Bob's reaction to Gene's panic attack definitely puts him in the running for Father of the Year. He immediately and calmly takes Gene out of the show when he sees that his son is scared, and is only slightly reluctant when Gene asks to go home. When Gene later decides to go back and see the end of the show, Bob is clearly hesitant to put him at risk of harm again (outright telling Gene not to go back for his sake) and only goes along with it when he sees that Gene is serious.
  • The Power of Rock: The Concept Album the laser show is based on is about how an evil ruler named General Inzanity bans rock music. He is defeated by a man named Rebel, who writes a song that convinces the people to rise up and defeat General Insanity. At the end the metaphor becomes literal when Rebel rolls a rock to defeat the General's forces. Bob lampshades how unsubtle it is, but because of Rule of Cool he and Gene don't really care.
  • Pluto Is Expendable: Specifically, the planetarium's old Pluto is out in the dumpster and used as a distraction.
Guard: This is why everyone hates you, Pluto!
  • Pop-Culture Pun Episode Title: It's a Shout-Out to Labyrinth.
  • Sensory Abuse: Poor Gene has this kind of reaction to the laser show.
  • Sir Swears-a-Lot: Louise and Tina call Gretchen Linda's friend who swears. That said, it's more of an Informed Attribute.
  • Take That!:
Bob: Wait, maybe you shouldn't know too much going in, I think it'll be better that way.
    Gene: Like the Iraq War.
  • Throwing the Distraction: To distract a guard so they can sneak into the planetarium, Gene and Bob take out an old model of Pluto out of the dumpster and roll it down the hill, which the guard then goes after.
  • Zeerust: General Inzanity is this in-universe. Bob describes the plot as taking place in the year 2007, "which used to be a long time in the future".
