Another day, another visit to Blue's Clues house. Immediately when Josh greets us, a phone ring can be heard, it is Magenta announcing that she is coming to visit, much to the delight of both Josh and Blue. When Josh asks the question about what Blue wants to do with Magenta when she arrives, Blue responds in the usual way: Announcing a game of Blue's Clues. This time she cleans the pawprint herself with her ears, which impresses Josh.
Going on the hunt for clues, Josh is temporarily distracted to look in the mirror and we notice something that shouldn't be on him, a blue Pawprint, but when the kids try to alert him he thinks they are complimenting his hair, before almost having a heart attack with happiness when he realized that the first clue was him, Josh.
While drawing the first clue, Josh hears an argument coming from the kitchen, Mr. Salt and Mrs. Pepper are planning to make edible cars for Blue and Magenta and ask Josh and Blue for help in making them, upon agreeing Josh informs them that he is a clue, which they respond to with excitement. When they finish the cart, Josh leaves imitating a car driver, before the viewer points out a clue in the middle of the path, which Josh mistakenly believes is on him again, but is actually on a smile button, which Josh mistakes for the viewer telling him to smile for a photo before realizing the second clue is a was the button, which means smile.
Josh prematurely believes he has guessed Blue's clues by saying that maybe Blue wants him to smile, until he recognizes that he literally smiles all the time. Upon realizing that he still needs to find one more clue, a familiar voice can be heard from the skidoo frame: Shovel and Pail were playing on the playground, Blue skidoos into the frame as Josh follows her. There Shovel and Pail ask us to help them find their friends, a duck and a snail. Following his footsteps, the duck was found in the lake, the snail was found behind a rock. Upon returning home before Josh can find any more clues that melody we love can be heard in the background, meaning the mail is here!
Before his letter came in, Mailbox was probably ready to make a joke, until he notices that there is something different about Josh, he seems happier than usual, Josh informs him that he was in fact the first clue of the episode, after congratulating our host, Mailbox announces that Josh received an Email, sent by two adorable children who were singing a song about their friendship.
When the video ends, Josh tries to say that he was looking forward to when Magenta arrives, and immediately receives a call from Magenta herself informing him that she was already on her way. Josh, who was smiling a few seconds ago, after ending the call begins to panic, as they hadn't found the third clue, until the kids told him that the third clue was in his hand this whole time, it was on his phone/notebook that he had used to talk with Magenta, the third clue is a Cell Phone.
Upon finding his third clue, we're ready for the Thinking Chair, where Josh forgot he was already sitting, much to Blue's amusement. In the Thinking Chair, Josh tries to figure out what Blue wants to do with a phone, a smile, and himself, Josh, when Magenta arrives. His first idea is that Blue wants him to make the phone smile, which is pointed out as not making sense, the viewer however is able to figure out the right answer: Take a picture, Josh should take a picture of Blue and Magenta smiling!
We've just figured out Blue's clues, and Magenta is here! When Blue and Magenta sit on the Couch, Josh asks the Viewer to take a photo of the two, before Shovel and Pail, along with Mr. Salt and Mrs. Pepper joins the photo, which Josh responds with animation. After the group photo was taken, Josh asks Blue to take a photo of them two together. And then it's time for so long, but we'll sing just one more song, this time with Magenta singing along, finally, we say goodbye to our friends once again, before the door closes.
Tropes:
- Ascended Fanboy: Josh discusses this upon realizing he was the first clue, saying he waited so long to achieve his dream of being there, and now he was a clue.
- Call-Back:
- The living room couch and mirror appear again, after being absent since "Magenta Gets Glasses", an episode of the third season from the original series.
- Mr. Salt mentions that it was a clue before, which happened in the episode “Blue's News”. Ironically, this would happen again one episode later in "Big News With Blue".
- Creative Closing Credits: During the end credits, Mrs. Pepper can be seen driving her edible car, Blue and Magenta are seen singing Magenta's leitmotif and Mr. Salt is seen pushing his car.
- Cartoon Juggling: Mrs. Pepper juggles the little pickles she uses for her edible cart this way, which impresses Josh.
- The Empath: Mailbox is able to tell with just a single look that Josh was more excited than usual, although he doesn't know why, while the others needed Josh to point out their excitement for them.
- Foreshadowing: Josh's anxiety issues and his status as a Stepford Smiler are demonstrated here for the first time, when he goes into an anxiety attack upon being unable to find the third clue (which was in his hand). This would be explored later in Blue's Big City Adventure, where the Cabbie explains in so many words that the reason Josh seems so confused all the time is because he jumps into things without thinking, and therefore misses important information.
- Leitmotif: Magenta's background music “Truly a Friend” is played here again when the house members find out that Magenta is coming to visit them.
- Motor Mouth: The way Josh reacted to finding out he was the first clue would leave Steve in the first episode thinking Josh was too cheerful. He goes completely crazy and gives a speech about how after waiting so long, his dream is finally coming true.
- Stepford Smiler: After receiving a video call from Magenta announcing that she was arriving from Blue's Clues house, Josh has a big smile on his face. Immediately after the call ends, Josh reveals that he is in panic, and almost has a mental breakdown. In the same episode it is revealed that he smiles all the time, implying that this is more common than it seems.
