Recap / Black Lightning 2018 S 2 E 7 The Sange

Go To

Jefferson sets his sights on saving the other baby from the Looker and the Sange.

  • Alien Blood: The Looker bleeds her element when Anissa accidentally impales her.
  • Badass and Baby: Jefferson and the baby he rescues.
  • Bond Villain Stupidity: Played with. The Looker doesn't bother to kill Jefferson herself, but she does leave her minions behind to Make Sure He's Dead. Unfortunately, they're not very bright.
  • Clothes Make the Superman: Not in Jefferson's case, much to the Sange's distress.
  • Double Standard: Defied. The Looker claims that she's a victim of this, as Jefferson can be openly proud of his black heritage while if she's proud of her heritage, she's deemed a racist. Jefferson snarks back that her idea of being proud of her heritage is killing black people and hanging them from trees. Also, she's displaying a Confederate flag, making entirely clear what about her heritage she's proud of.
  • Electric Torture: The Sange attempt this on Jefferson. For obvious reasons, it doesn't work.
  • Good Is Not Soft: Jefferson decides to hand the Looker over to the ASA, seeing as nobody else can contain her. When Anissa points out that they will most likely experiment on her, Jefferson replies that it's her problem.
  • Honor Before Reason: Is Jefferson going into unknown territory to save that baby, a noble yet stupid idea? Yes, but it's the sight of two black corpses hanging from the tree that only makes him more determined to do it, because as he puts it "somebody drew a line in the sand". He pays for it, when the Sange overpower him, stripping him of his costume and therefore learning his true identity.
  • Internal Reveal: After last episode revealed to the audience that Gambi survived the assassination attempt, this episode has Jefferson find out as well.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: The Looker tries to claim this between her and Black Lightning, since they "look after their own". He shuts her down pretty quickly since she's an unrepentant white supremacist, complete with Confederate Flag proudly on display ... and that's not evening getting into how she uses her powers to control the Sange like her slaves.
  • Offhand Backhand: Jefferson knocks out a Sange who tries to jump while when he rescues the baby, without even looking up.
  • Shooting Superman: The Sange aren't aware just how Black Lightning's powers work, so they don't know how less than useless zapping him with a bedspring is, or that it's in fact making him stronger. Having been beaten before, Jefferson plays dead until he's safely recharged, thanks the goons holding him, and proceeds to wipe the floor with them.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Without the Looker forcing them to fight for her, the Sange leave peacefully once they're freed.
  • Smug Snake: The Looker and the Sange are under the impression that Black Lightning's suit are the source of his powers and that electrocution will kill him. They are so very wrong on both accounts.
  • Wrong Genre Savvy: Electric Torture might work in a non-superhero setting, but as Jefferson himself points out, his powers don't come from his suit.
