Recap / Black Lightning 2018 S 2 E 16 The Omega

Go To

Jennifer is narrowly saved from her powers killing her. Meanwhile Tobias incites a city-wide riot all to draw Black Lightning for one final confrontation.

  • Achilles' Heel: Tobias has correctly deduced that Black Lightning draws his powers from the city's electric grid. If the city doesn't have any powers, neither does Black Lightning (though Gambi has given him a battery in his suit to draw from should the power go out).
  • Advertisement:
  • Agent Provocateur: Tobias sends members of the 100 to incite riots in response to the "Cape Guy" shooting.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Tobias is finally captured, but the Markovians are slowly making their way to Freeland to declare war on the city's metahuman populace.
  • Crazy-Prepared:
    • If Lala somehow managed to learn how to resist Tobias' trigger phrase to control him, Tobias had another one designed to kill him for good if he ever went rogue.
    • As is expected, Gambi has batteries Jefferson and (presumably the others) can draw from should the power grid go out. It only has so much power, however.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle:
    • Lynn gives Dr. Jace an absolutely brutal beating.
    • Tobias doesn't last too long against Black Lightning and Jennifer, either.
  • Disney Death:
    • Turns out, Reverend Holt wasn't killed by Cutter's poison, instead just being put into a coma, from which he's now awakened.
    • Advertisement:
    • Khalil's presence in a pod suggests that he's not actually dead.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Played with. Cutter is audibly disgusted when she hears the DA won't press charges on the Cape Guy shooting, but also has no problem with Tobias taking advantage of the situation.
  • Extranormal Prison: Tobias is put in one after being captured by Black Lightning and Lightning. When Tobias demands to see a lawyer, he's told in no uncertain terms that he's been classified as a dangerous metahuman threat and normal civil protections don't apply to him. The prison seems to use Force Field Doors to keep the prisoners from escaping.
  • Inadvertent Entrance Cue: When Anissa wants to go out to stop the riot, Jennifer mentions that Gambi still needed help. He then enters the room and says, "Least of your worries."
  • Internal Reveal:
    • Black Lightning finds out that Tobias was the one who kidnapped the pod kids, not Markovia.
    • Advertisement:
    • Agent Odell reveals that he knows that the Pierce family are metahumans.
  • Laser-Guided Karma:
    • Dr. Jace meets a well-deserved fate when she's captured by a Markovia bounty hunter; she should've stayed with the ASA when she had the chance.
    • After two seasons of being a Karma Houdini Tobias is finally taken down and taken into an illegal black site prison because of his metahuman strength.
  • Left Hanging: Most of the season's subplots are wrapped up neatly but there are still two that are noticeably left hanging.
    • We never find out who put the hit on Gambi.
    • Anissa still hasn't found Grace.
  • Mood Whiplash: A happy dinner at the Pierce family is interrupted by Agent Odell.
  • Not Quite Dead: Rev. Holt somehow survived Cutter's poisoning attempt. He chalks it up to a miracle from God.
  • Oh, Crap!: Dr. Jace when she realizes that Markovia has sent a bounty hunter after her.
  • Power Nullifier: When put in the Extranormal Prison, Tobias is fitted with a special collar that negates his Super Strength.
  • ShoutOut: Thunder compares Gambi to Batman, due to both being Crazy-Prepared.
  • Screw This, I'm Out of Here!: Tobias grabbing Cutter by the neck in fit of anger makes her decide that she's had enough, and she leaves him and Freeland.
  • Sequel Hook: The episode ends with Agent Odell revealing he knows about the Pierce family's secret and trying to deputize them so they can help the ASA nullify Markovia's attempts to start a metahuman war.
  • Storming the Castle: Lala, Jennifer/Lightning, and Black Lightning all end up assaulting Tobias in his penthouse.
  • Trigger Phrase: Since his second resurrection, Lala is no longer under the influence of the control phrase "The Devil deals the cards". However, Tobias turns out to have given him another trigger, "E pluribus, unum", which causes all his tattoos to come out at once.
  • Villainous Breakdown: When Black Lighting and Thunder take out his metahuman hit squad and his city-wide riots fail to become as extensive as he'd planned, Tobias completely loses the Mask of Sanity he's been operating under, unleashing all the pod kids at once just to spite the heroes and nearly killing Cutter when she tries to stop him.
  • Wham Shot: Khalil in an ASA pod.
