Recap / Big Mouth S 3 E 3 Obsessed

Go To

Nick grows obsessed with Cellsea and posts an embarrassing video of his father online to keep her satisfied. Maury and Matthew are trying to find a way for Matthew to kiss Aiden. Jay bonds with Missy when they decide team up to collaborate on an erotic fanfiction.

  • Beware the Nice Ones: Angered by her son's addiction to the phone, Diane finally goes crazy, smashes the phone with a chair and then pierces through it and the table with a firepoker. Connie, Elliot, and Andrew are all petrified at it.
Andrew: What Diane did was... was primal.

  • Black Comedy: Matthew's parents like this, which disturbs Jessi to some degree.
  • Continuity Nod: The episode makes reference to "The Rock Of Gibraltar", the sexy romantic novel that the girls (and Nick) read back in season one, as Missy is writing fanfic with the main character of that novel.
  • Crazy-Prepared: Diane not only hides Cellsea in the air ducts, but she also locks the box she put Cellsea in.
  • Guy-on-Guy Is Hot: Connie tells Jessie to not "negotiate against herself" when she says that she won't watch Matthew and Aiden make out. Meanwhile, both Missy and Jay are turned on by writing erotic fanfic of Nathan Fillion and Gustavo.
  • Hypocritical Humor: After Missy gets mad at Jay for grabbing her fanfic notebook, he says she's overreacting, right before shouting that he'll kill her if she doesn't stop overreacting.

  • Know When to Fold 'Em: After witnessing Diane go crazy and destroy Nick's phone (and a coffee table) with a firepoker, Connie's first instinct is to tell Nick to shut up and leave.
Connie: Baby, you need to shut the fuck up right now. Get that tooshie upstairs.
  • Most Fanfic Writers Are Girls: Played with. Missy is the one writing fanfic, but Jay falls in love with the story and ends up helping her write (though he is mostly an idea guy than a writer).
  • Shout-Out: The opening dream has Nick go through a number of memes from the previous year.
  • That Came Out Wrong: Andrew realizes that one of the things he says to try and get Nick's attention away from Cellsea sounds very wrong.
Andrew: Hey Nick. Paging Doctor Nick. Patient Glouberman desperately needs your attention. I need a... hot Nick injection. No, no. That didn't come our right.

  • You Are Grounded!: Diane grounds Nick and sends him to his room when she finds out that Nick not only disobeyed her and took his phone back but also convinced Andrew to steal Diane’s car and accidentally destroyed the garage door in the process. Diane issues Nick this punishment after destroying the phone.
