Recap / Big Finish Doctor Who JALS 5 E 4 The Final Act

Go To

Jago and Litefoot have unlocked the time cabinet and have unwittingly unleashed Magnus Greel’s murderous puppet Mr Sin. Mr Sin hobbles out of the cabinet brandishing its knife while snorting like a pig. It stands between the Infernal Investigators and the time cabinet where Jago’s crystal is locked in. Litefoot suggests that one of them distracts Mr Sin while the other retrieves the crystal. Jago opts to grab the crystal while Litefoot distracts the murderous mannequin. Jago dives past Mr Sin and grabs the crystal and Litefoot manages to knock the puppet over. They quickly retreat while Mr Sin is incapacitated. The two run through the warehouse and soon hear the sound of snorting as Mr Sin has recovered and is giving chase. While running, Litefoot deduces that Godiva must have perfected her own crystal key for the time cabinet. The evidence being Mr Sin locked inside it and reanimated since its previous encounter with the Infernal Investigators. Which can only mean that if Godiva can manage to figure out how the time cabinet works…what’s to stop her wreaking havoc on time and space? Jago laments that they can’t just summon the police to deal with the problem. Jago’s worrisome comment gives Litefoot an idea. They hurry out of the tunnels and rush back to the bookshop.

Later that night, Jago, Litefoot and Ellie visit Sergeant Sacker’s house. They impatiently ring the doorbell, much to Sacker’s annoyance. Upon opening the door, Sacker rudely slams the door back in their faces. The investigators refuse to leave and ring his doorbell once more. Ellie calls out to him stating that he wouldn’t want to disturb his neighbours and namedrops his rank. Sacker reopens the door and whispers for her not to call him a sergeant, implying that his neighbours are unaware he is an officer of the law. With the leverage against him, Sacker decides to invite the investigators inside. The group aren’t impressed with the state of his house, noting the number of washing up in the sink, and numerous bottles of alcohol strewn around. Sacker asks about how they found out where he lived, to which Ellie responds that she made a few phone calls but promises to keep that information to themselves. He then asks the more pressing question, why are they here? Jago and Litefoot tell Sacker about their first adventure together when they thwarted the villainous machinations of Magnus Greel, Li H’sen Chang and Mr Sin (The entire story is fast forwarded). Litefoot ends the tale with how they managed to rediscover Greel’s time cabinet in Godiva’s warehouse, along with Mr Sin. If it remains unchecked, Godiva could wreak tremendous havoc on London, or the entire world! Ellie then states that they need Sacker to rally some officers to raid Godiva’s warehouse. Sacker sits silently for a moment before labelling the trio as unhinged and refuses to believe a word of it. Ellie tries to convince him that he’s seen some strange stuff that their story might hold some weight. Sacker still refuses to believe it. Even if he did believe them, he can’t just organise a raid to retrieve a strange cabinet guarded by a homicidal doll…

The scene abruptly cuts to Sacker leading a police raid on Godiva’s warehouse. The police storm their way down the London Underground station towards the tunnels, followed by Jago and Litefoot.

Deep in the tunnels, Litefoot directs the police to the door that leads into Godiva’s warehouse. The police force the door and switch on the lights to the warehouse. Sacker orders his officers to search every inch of the warehouse and adlibs his reason as ‘The warehouse houses stolen goods owned by Fingers Freddie, the Fleet Street Fence’. Sacker also warns his men to keep an eye out for a midget with a knife or as Jago theatrically describes him: Sadistic Sin, the Diminutive Dagger Dealer. With the police now locking down the warehouse, Litefoot suggests that he, Jago and Sacker now secure the time cabinet…

The infernal investigators lead Sacker to where they last saw the cabinet…only to find it has disappeared. Sacker deduces the cabinet was dragged away as there is a trail of markings on the floor. Question is, what else could have been taken? Litefoot realises that the distillation chamber that Magnus Greel used on his victims is missing, as well as a few of Godiva’s magical props. Jago reveals that Godiva is meant to be a guest on his show at the Palace Theatre that evening. Litefoot theorises that she may not go ahead with her appearance if she is now probably aware that he and Jago suspect her of murder and tampering with alien technology. But Jago believes that Mr Sin may have just informed her that there was a break in but is probably too stupid to tell her who did it. He is mostly certain that she will still make an appearance at the theatre, with her missing props. They decide to meet up with Ellie and plan a method of dealing with Godiva before she can do any real damage…

Jago and Litefoot meet up with Ellie at Higgies later that morning. They assume that Godiva won’t suspect them of breaking into her warehouse. But unfortunately, the warehouse raid by the police found nothing that incriminates Godiva. The only thing the infernal investigators can do is wait for Godiva to appear at the Palace Theatre that evening and catch her before she uses the time cabinet for any nefarious deeds. Jago promises to reserve the best seats for Litefoot and Ellie.

At the Palace Theatre, Godiva is irritably instructing the porters to be careful with her cabinet. Even giving Aubrey a piece of her mind in regard to the organisation of things, but Aubrey takes very little notice and leaves her to it. Jago, Litefoot and Ellie spot her, comforted to know they’ve found her. Aubrey greets Jago and gets to chatting with him. Unable to leave Aubrey, Jago instructs Litefoot and Ellie to go backstage and search for the time cabinet. Jago is annoyed to find that Aubrey has seats planned for Litefoot and Ellie at the far back of the theatre, but Jago insists they have the royal box seats, only to find that Aubrey has placed sound gear in the box instead of prestigious guests. Before he can rant any further, Godiva approaches Jago and warmly greets him, her sour mood now gone. Litefoot and Ellie take their leave to investigate backstage. Godiva mentions that she has to get her costume ready – she will be dressed as her namesake… Jago quite understandably does a double take, believing Godiva intends to dress up (or dress down) as Lady Godiva. But Godiva reassures him her costume is meant to be Queen Guinevere of Arthurian Legend. Even though Jago doesn’t hide his disappointment that his initial assumption wasn’t the correct one…

Litefoot and Ellie investigate the prop room. They find a lot of items covered in dust, obviously left over before the theatre was restored. They hear footsteps and proceed to hide, only to find the footsteps belong to Jago. He reveals that he snuck away from Aubrey to check up on the whereabouts of the time cabinet. Something catches Litefoot’s eye and he wanders over to something...he calls Jago and Ellie to what he’s found – Mr Sin. Thankfully, the demented puppet is inactive, so Litefoot takes the opportunity to remove its fuse just as The Doctor did when he fought it. As Litefoot prepares to do the deed, Mr Sin snorts loudly and returns to life, armed with its knife. It corners Litefoot and Ellie, so Jago tries to distract the puppet to no avail. But he quickly remembers where they are standing is a trap door. Litefoot and Ellie quickly open the door and fall through to escape, leaving Mr Sin alone with Jago. As Mr Sin prepares to run through Jago with its knife, Jago manages to make an escape through the exit and locks Mr Sin in the prop room alone…

Underneath the theatre, Litefoot and Ellie wade their way through the sewers. Litefoot confirms that they didn’t see the time cabinet. So Ellie asks the pertinent question – why hasn’t Godiva used it? Litefoot explains that Godiva must have some way of operating it as she obviously managed to open it to store Mr Sin inside, and Jago’s Venusian crystal reacts to it as well. Ellie wonders how much more they have to travel to leave the sewers. Litefoot admits that these sewers were only ventured into by The Doctor, Leela and Jago during the Weng-Chiang fiasco, while he stayed in the boat at the sewer entrance…He regrets to admit they may have to swim out into the Thames, much to Ellie’s displeasure.

Aubrey is going over the direction of the production. Jago tries to interrupt to talk to Aubrey, but the director is too preoccupied to listen to his star, so Jago decides to leave him to it.

That evening, Jago reunites with Litefoot and Ellie. Both parties are grateful to see each other safe from the murderous Mr Sin. Even though Ellie is fuming after having to swim in the Thames. Jago confirms that he managed to secure the royal box for Litefoot and Ellie and promises to meet up with them in the interval. Litefoot asks Jago if there have been any developments. But Jago denies anything has happened. For all he knows Mr Sin is still locked in the prop room and Godiva hasn’t done anything suspicious. Ellie states her intention to follow Godiva after the show ends to see where she goes, possibly to the time cabinet…

Litefoot and Ellie watch as a singer performs a beautifully haunting melody. Once the song ends, Jago steps onto the stage and theatrically introduces the next act – Guinevere Godiva! Godiva starts the act by asking for the assistance of a female member of the audience. In particular, she points to Ellie and addresses her by name. Godiva invites Ellie to the stage. Litefoot urges Ellie to not go onto the stage, but seeing the clapping crowd, Ellie doesn’t believe she has a choice. Besides, she can’t do anything dangerous on live TV. Litefoot doesn’t feel reassured and follows her onto the stage…

While Godiva waits for Ellie, she asks for Jago’s assistance on stage. Jago willingly does so, and Godiva asks him to inspect the cabinet she has on stage. Jago nearly flubs and thinks it to be the time cabinet, but thankfully it’s a harmless red cabinet. She asks he checks to make sure the cabinet is solid, to which he does confirm. Ellie and Litefoot walk onto the stage. Godiva asks Litefoot to introduce himself to the audience, to which he does. Godiva smiles and says that for her act – she’ll call him George. Ellie asks nervously what she needs to do. Godiva instructs Ellie to step into the cabinet. Godiva states the cabinet will be raised above the stage as chains drop down from the ceiling to lift the cabinet. All of a sudden, to the sound of a drumroll…the cabinet seemingly explodes! The cabinet is revealed to be miraculously intact, but Ellie has disappeared. The cloud cheers for the magnificent illusion. Litefoot demands to know what has happened to Ellie, while Jago tries to calm him down and remind him that its just a trick. Godiva reassures him that she is quite safe…in fact he’ll see her very soon. All of a sudden, the theatre lights go out and a young boy’s voice calls out ‘Telegram! Telegram for Mr Litefoot!’ The lights come back on and Litefoot is approached by a young boy in Victorian garb who hands him a piece of paper. Jago hands the boy a shilling and sends him on his way. Godiva instructs Litefoot to read what the telegram has to say: ‘Good trick. Everything fine. We’ll meet you as arranged after the show. We’ll explain what happened then. Everything will be crystal clear. Signed Ellie Higson.’ The crowd cheers as the trick comes to its conclusion. Jago keeps up the pretence as show host and escorts Litefoot back to his royal box.

While outside the theatre auditorium, Jago admits he had no idea how Godiva managed to spirit Ellie into thin air. Litefoot shows him the part of the telegram that he didn’t read out to the public: ‘Give me the crystal or Ellie Higson will disappear forever. Bring it to the place where you killed my lord and master. You have until 2am’. The two men don’t know who Godiva’s lord and master could be, but they decide to stick with the plan of stalking Godiva after the show. Hopefully, she’ll lead them to Ellie and the time cabinet…

Later that evening, after the show has concluded. Litefoot is waiting with Jago’s personal driver, Hudson as Jago hurriedly tries to get to the car, but is hounded by admiring fans and the paparazzi. He manages to get to the safety of his car and meet with Litefoot. They haven’t spotted Godiva yet, but she must come out the public exit, unless she has managed to spirit herself out of the theatre. They deduce the reason for Mr Sin being at the theatre, to hold Ellie hostage to wherever she’s being held. Aubrey taps on the car window and offers his congratulations to Jago. Litefoot asks if Aubrey has seen Godiva under the pretence of offering his congratulations. Aubrey reveals that Godiva immediately left after the curtain dropped, so she’s long gone. He leaves the duo to take the stars out to the pub. Jago and Litefoot ponder who Godiva’s lord and master could possibly be…and unfortunately its midnight, which means they have only two hours to find Ellie. Jago laments that they need a detective for this sort of thing…which gives Litefoot an idea.

Jago and Litefoot return to Sergeant Sacker’s house and once again impatiently ring his doorbell. Sacker has had enough of the infernal investigators after the raid at the warehouse, but the gentlemen nonetheless don’t listen and invite themselves inside, much to the officer’s annoyance.

Litefoot explains Ellie’s disappearance to Sacker. He shows the sergeant the telegram threat he received. The threat is revealed to have been written with cut out newspaper headings. Sacker immediately deduces the telegram is fake from the quality of the paper, and he notices a slight watermark behind the letters. He gently peels away some of the letters to reveal an image of a dragon. Jago and Litefoot now know where to find Godiva. The House of the Dragon… Sacker agrees to help rescue Ellie, but covers up his reasons by stating that he has to keep an eye on the infernal investigators…

Sacker drives the infernal investigators to The House of the Dragon with one hour to spare. With no sign of Godiva outside and the place boarded up, the trio decide to let themselves in…

Jago kicks the door down, which earns the ire of Litefoot and Sacker as they are trying to be as discreet as possible. Jago asks Litefoot about the ‘lord and master’ part of the ransom note and asks if she could mean…Weng-Chiang. Litefoot dismisses the theory as Weng-Chiang was the alias of their first ever supernatural foe…Magnus Greel. Litefoot informs Sacker that they are looking for the dragon chamber room – the place where Jago and Litefoot had their fateful battle with Greel. From memory, Litefoot leads the way to where he believes the room is…only to find a brick wall where the entrance should be. They backtrack only to find another wall. They continuously backtrack until they venture around the building with no sign of entry to the dragon chamber. Jago comes to an epiphany. As the walls are brand new, Godiva must have sealed off the room by installing these walls, so there must be a secret way in. But Litefoot remembers their first encounter with Greel, they too know a secret way in!

Sacker is completely dumbfounded by the investigators method of entry, a dumbwaiter. He is further unassured when Jago mentions the ropes felt unsecure back in the Victorian era, he can only imagine their condition now…With that in mind, Litefoot suggests that they each use the dumbwaiter one at a time. Only question is…who will venture headlong into possible danger first? Sacker wearily nominates himself and he clambers into the creaking dumbwaiter and can only sit inside as Jago and Litefoot lift him the dumbwaiter and await his signal to pull it back down to let them use it.

Moments later, the infernal investigators join Sacker in the dragon chamber where they find the room is lit with candles and nobody in sight to meet them. But they do see Greel’s giant dragon statue that he used to menace them with its laser eyes. They also find Greel’s distillation chamber that he used to drain the lifeforce out of his victims to sustain himself. Litefoot remarks at a familiar stain on the floor, he remembers this was where The Doctor destroyed the time cabinet’s key by stamping on it. Sacker draws the attention of the investigators to a large, Chinese box nearby – the time cabinet. Godiva slinks out of the shadows to greet the trio, she has Ellie hostage and is armed with a gun. Godiva is confident in her victory and gloats that she holds the cards. She has leverage over Jago and Litefoot with Ellie as her captive, Mr Sin as her enforcer and the time cabinet at her disposal. But Litefoot states there’s only one of her and four of them to stand against her. The trio rush to attack the villainous illusionist but the dragon statue suddenly fires its beams at the trio, halting their rush. Godiva reiterates that she holds the cards, including Greel’s infamous dragon statue. Jago deduces that Mr Sin must be operating the statue’s lasers like he did in their initial encounter with The Doctor. Litefoot bargains with Godiva to let Ellie go. After all, she has the means to kill them whenever she likes. Godiva agrees and releases Ellie but warns them that if they try to attack her again, Mr Sin will vaporise them. As she says this, Mr Sin snorts with glee and anticipation…

Godiva watches the reunion but promises a deadlier reunion soon. She reveals that her grandfather spent two days trying to collect every broken fragment of the original crystal key The Doctor destroyed. He then spent the rest of his life trying to piece together the thousands of shards to reassemble the key. Godiva’s grandfather then passed on the task to her father and Godiva carried on the task after her father passed away until eventually she managed to reassemble the key herself. As proof, she holds up the original crystal key as it pulsates with light. She states the key is only powerful enough to open the time cabinet, hence how Mr Sin was sealed inside. On that information, Litefoot assumes she needs Jago’s crystal to fully operate the cabinet. But Godiva states that isn’t the reason. Like the Venusian crystal, the original key has an affinity for human minds, much like the zygma energy that powers the cabinet. Godiva explains that Zygma energy focuses the mental energy of minds through crystals, much like how the Cytherians on Venus were able to store their consciousnesses inside their crystals. Which can only mean that the original owner of the time cabinet has a mental connection to the crystal…Godiva’s ‘lord and master’ or Magnus Greel’s conscience lives inside the crystal key! Godiva had no real interest in the time cabinet or its powers, she needed it to act as a physical conduit to fully reinstate Greel’s mind and revive him! And with Jago’s crystal to focus the energy, she can do it! Jago frisks his pockets and to his horror, he can’t find his crystal. Godiva gleefully reveals his crystal in her hand. She pickpocketed it from him. She then turns to Litefoot – a polite, intelligent gentleman. He’ll make the perfect host body for Greel’s mind. Sacker is having none of it and offers himself in the Professor’s place. Godiva is rushed for time and forcibly ushers Litefoot inside the time cabinet. He reassures his allies that everything will be fine. With the crystals in place and the host locked in the cabinet. Godiva orders Mr Sin to shoot the crystals with the dragon’s laser eyes to create the rush of energy to make the transfer. Mr Sin gleefully opens fire on the crystals…but soon the dragon’s lasers stop working. Godiva is now livid and raving madly at Mr Sin for failing her. Litefoot is absolutely fine and his friends free him while Godiva rants and raves crazily. Godiva points her weapon at the group and demands to know what they did to the dragon’s weapons. They admit to no wrongdoing, but Godiva refuses to see sense and demands they leave Litefoot in the cabinet, so she can find another source of power to complete the mental transfer. Mr Sin has had quite enough of Godiva’s lunatic ranting and shoves her into the distillation chamber and powers it up, all the group can do is watch Godiva scream as her life energy drains from her body and eventually ages her to a groaning husk while Mr Sin watches with sickening glee. The investigators soon realise that Sacker was inside the cabinet trying to free Litefoot and was still inside when the distillation chamber was activated. Mr Sin draining Godiva’s life force was the energy solution needed to complete the transfer. Sacker emerges from the cabinet…but his eyes have a sinister glow and his Scottish drawl has disappeared in favour of a menacing, commanding tone. Sacker commands Mr Sin to stop the distillation chamber as too much energy would be consumed rather than possessed. Jago and Litefoot look on in horror as they realise what has happened…Magnus Greel has returned and has taken over Sacker’s body! The terrified trio try to run but Mr Sin cuts off their escape and waves his knife threateningly. He gleefully thanks Godiva’s ailing old body for her dedication by transferring her life essence so that he may live. Even so, the investigators stand their ground against their old archenemy and refuse to let him escape, even if it costs their lives. But Greel has an ace up his sleeve, he’s programmed the time cabinet to travel to 1893 so he can wreak havoc in the past and destroy the future. Litefoot remembers what happened to Greel the last time he used the cabinet and it completely disfigured his body. But Greel assures them that with Jago’s crystal, he will have no side effects from the zygma beams this time. What Greel didn’t count on though was Godiva’s weak husk of a body crawling out of the distillation chamber and attacking him. With her last effort, Godiva shoves Greel into the cabinet and holds him inside, while Mr Sin tries to wrestle her off his master. Jago and Litefoot see this as an opportunity to escape, but Ellie refuses to leave until Greel is finished for good. She remembers what Greel said, more power from the distillation chamber to the time cabinet will consume the host body, so they must find a way to overload the cabinet and kill Greel. Against her friends wishes, Ellie willingly seals herself inside the distillation chamber and bids goodbye as the chamber powers up. Ellie screams in agony while Greel laughs insanely. The infernal investigators try to get Ellie out of the cabinet and free her, but the chamber is sealed tight and hot to the touch. The energy pours into the cabinet and into Sacker’s body as Greel shouts out angrily that he can’t die. An almighty explosion rocks the room and both machines power down. Jago and Litefoot look at the wreck of the cabinet, nothing could’ve survived that explosion. They free Ellie from the distillation chamber and are surprised to find Ellie looks completely fine, her body isn’t aged or horrendously deformed like Greel’s former victims. They inform Ellie that she saved them, the overloaded energy blast killed Greel, Godiva and Mr Sin. Unfortunately, it came at the cost of David Sacker’s life.

Later, Litefoot theorises how Ellie managed to survive the distillation chamber. As the chamber is programmed to sap the normal lifespans of humans, thanks to her vampiric genetics, Ellie’s immortality is far greater than a human’s. So the huge amount of energy fed from her infinite lifespan overloaded the chamber and flooded the cabinet with so much energy that it couldn’t contain it and blew up. Ellie mentions that she feels different, perhaps she won’t go on forever…She eventually breaks down and cries as it feels like a relief for her. She mentions that she hasn’t cried like this since Litefoot’s funeral. To which Jago hopes is a long way off yet. Litefoot mentions that he and Ellie knew that things would work out in the end. After all, she saw his book. Ellie and Jago are confused. Litefoot confesses that he found his own published book before Ellie did in his shop but took care not to read it himself. As Litefoot hasn’t written the book yet and its original edition was published in 1893, its proof that the duo do make it home so that Litefoot can publish it in his personal future. Jago looks at the cabinet and notices not a scratch on it, in fact it looks almost intact even though it was caught in the midst of the explosion. The energy blast must have been absorbed into its circuitry, and Greel mentioned that he had set the coordinates for 1893 and with Jago’s crystal, it will work safely! Jago knows where they are going with their thinking, but is it really safe? Litefoot sees no other possibility of returning, plus he has a book to write. Ellie mentions that her younger self will be at the Red Tavern to hear about their adventures, even though they were incredibly coy about what they told her, so they didn’t hint at her personal future. Jago realises that Ellie knew all along that they’d return to the past as she remembers meeting them after returning from their adventures with The Doctor! With that said, Jago and Litefoot now know what to do. Both men squeeze their way inside the cabinet and Ellie bids them both farewell and goodbye. With the door to the cabinet closed, Jago starts pulling at random levers and the cabinet starts to dematerialise from 1968 as Ellie watches on…wondering if she should have told them what to expect when they return…but decides to let them find out for themselves…

The cabinet materialises in a foggy street in the middle of the night in Victorian London. Both men wonder where they are. Litefoot assumes by the dense fog that they are close to the Thames. They hear the sound of footsteps in the fog heading towards them. A gentleman dressed in a decorated, military uniform emerges from the fog and addresses the infernal investigators by name. Before they can ask how he knew who they were and where to find them, the gentleman curtly replies that he was told he would find them here and asks them to come with him. Jago and Litefoot demand answers. The mysterious gentleman introduces himself simply as ‘The Colonel’ and they must come with him immediately. After all, its not a good idea to keep Her Majesty waiting…
