Go To

Teaser: The Spectre enacts his vengeance on a scientist.

Batman and Detective Chimp enlist Vixen and B'wana Beast in order to battle a conspiracy of ape villains: Gorilla Grodd, Gorilla Boss, and Monsieur Mallah.

Tropes:

  • Bait-and-Switch: Throughout the episode, Vixen keeps telling B'wana Beast that the two of them need to talk, which the latter thinks that it means she wants to break up with him. At the end of the episode, however…
Vixen: Now, where were we before all this started? Oh, yes. We have to finish our little talk.
B'Wana Beast: Mari, I know I'm not anyone's idea of the perfect boyfriend, but i-if you just...
    Vixen: Will you marry me?
B'Wana Beast: (taken aback) Me? Marry? Mari? You? Us? Yes! I will! I-I do!
Vixen: (leaning up to kiss him) Come here, you.
  • Berserk Button: Grodd takes offense to being called a monkey.
    Grodd: Say uncle, Batman!
    Batman: Make me, monkey!
    Grodd: MONKEY?!
  • Blatant Lies: Grodd doesn't have any obsession with Batman. Honest!
Batman: (noticing the Batman-esque utility belt Grodd's wearing) Nice belt.
Grodd: I've had this belt for years! YOU'VE JUST NEVER SEEN ME WEAR IT!
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Batman's opinion of B'wana Beast, saying he's odd but good at his job.
  • Cold Open: Batman and the Spectre deal with Dr. Milo, who is controlling rats to commit crimes. After defeating him, Batman insists they leave him for the police, but as soon as he leaves, the Spectre returns to give Dr. Milo a much more… fitting punishment.
  • Fun with Acronyms: G.A.S.P., or Gorillas and Apes Seizing Power!
  • Hypocritical Humor: Fresh off making flying rats, B'wana Beast says that flying gorillas are gross.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: While in lock-up, B'wana Beast has this reaction for failing to defend Gotham.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: B'wana Beast merges Monsieur Mallah with a caterpillar, expecting a tiny and harmless speck. What he gets is a massive, multi-armed menace with Super-Strength.
  • No-Sell: Grodd's mind control is useless on Detective Chimp, thanks to a meditation trick taught by Batman.
  • Only Sane Man: Monsieur Mallah points out that Grodd is obsessed with Batman and that that potentially distracts from the group's true goal.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: Detective Chimp tries to infiltrate G.A.S.P., but is immediately rumbled. Possibly on account of being the only chimpanzee in a room full of gorillas.
  • Pet the Dog:
    • In the cold open, some of Doctor Milo's rats are nearly crushed by a falling beam. The Spectre stops it. After all, the rats are innocent. Then he lets them have someo- err, something to eat...
    • Pretty much everyone thinks B'Wana Beast is a loser, but Batman has genuine faith in him.
  • Pop-Culture Pun Episode Title: Of the 1988 documentary Gorillas in the Mist.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: After Vixen is taken out.
B'wana Beast: If you've hurt her, Grodd, I'll—
Grodd: Do what? Humankind is weak, brainless, [sniffs him] and smelly, but you? You're just pathetic. And Batman thought you could defend Gotham. [to his mooks] Take out this trash.
  • This Cannot Be!: Using Batman and some nearby animals, B'wana Beast creates a fearsome griffin. Grodd has this reaction right before the shellacking.
  • This Is Gonna Suck: Batman when he realizes B'wana Beast is using his power on him.
  • Villain Team-Up: G.A.S.P. is headed by Grodd, Monsieur Mallah, and Gorilla Boss.
  • Women Are Wiser: As B'wana Beast wallows in self-pity, Vixen tells him they have to focus on making things right.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: As the final fight ramps up, B'wana Beast just continues to blame himself for failing and apologizes to Batman.
Batman: I picked you for this mission because I believed in you, B'wana. Now, go and prove me right.
