Recap / Arrow S 5 E 5 Human Target

Go To

The team finds Wild Dog, and Church decides to make his final move in Star City. Meanwhile Oliver finds his lives as the mayor and Green Arrow are getting dangerously intertwined as his past in Russia begins to haunt him.

Tropes:

  • Achilles in His Tent: After being rescued, Rene is unwilling to keep going with the team, feeling he's failed them. John convinces him that if he really wants to make amends, he needs to keep fighting.
  • Amicable Exes: Oliver isn't upset that Felicity's moved on. He's just disappointed that she didn't tell him about it.
  • Asshole Victim: At the end of the episode, Church is killed by Prometheus after he reveals Oliver's identity as the Green Arrow to him. Given his atrocious crimes, it's hard to feel bad for him.
  • Batman Gambit: Chance pretends to be Oliver and fakes his death, in order for Tobias Church to feel safe enough to move forward with his plans in creating a drug empire, giving Team Arrow a chance to take him down.
  • Becoming the Mask: Chance states that he has to mentally become the person he's impersonating in order to properly do the job.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Church's costumed killer had just beaten up Evelyn and Curtis and is about to finish them off, when a mook appears with a machine gun. The hired freak tells him that he doesn't need any help when the mook guns him down and reveals himself to be the Human Target. The Human Target gets another one in the past when he saves Oliver in Russia from getting jumped by thugs.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Susan Williams, unsurprisingly. She says she'll back off Oliver for a month, but she does a little digging and finds a picture from Oliver's year in Russia.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Church's reign of terror may be over, but Prometheus' is just beginning; not to mention Susan Williams is about to make life hell for Oliver.
  • Continuity Nod: Diggle mentions Evelyn's brief stint as a "Black Canary" wannabe.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle:
    • Prometheus versus an entire squad of policemen escorting Tobias. They didn't stand a chance.
    • Oliver vs. Tobias. In their first fight, Oliver was distracted by various issues and hampered by the cramped quarters. Then he threw a fight to make a point to Ragman, and then the rest of the team had to go in without him while he was rescuing Diggle. This time, he finally gets to go up against the guy on equal terms, and puts him down in about ten seconds.
  • Death by Secret Identity: At the start of the episode, Church learns Green Arrow's real identity. At the end of the episode, he dies.
  • Dig Your Own Grave: Church makes Rene do this. Luckily, Green Arrow interrupts before he's finished.
  • Disc-One Final Boss: Tobias Church was defeated and the season isn't over yet.
  • Elite Mook: The unnamed assassin Church hires to kill Oliver is skilled enough to appear out of nowhere and block an arrow from Prometheus, as well as fight off Evelyn and Curtis without any problems. He only goes down to a cheap shot from a disguised Christopher Chance.
  • Evil Is Petty: Church gives Prometheus Green Arrow's real identity both out of cowardice and revenge.
  • Failure Knight: Rene feels awfully dejected because of his constant screwups way before he joined Team Arrow. To recap his past failures so far: He got dishonorably discharged in the Navy for his unauthorized interrogation to a prisoner, disobeyed orders to not confront Ragman back in the clinic, killed Sampson the drug dealer (that could have been arrested by the authorities to bring down a drug ring), and he was captured and tortured by Church into revealing the Green Arrow's secret identity.
  • Faking the Dead: With help from Chance, Oliver fakes his death at the hands of Church's hired assassin.
  • Idiot Ball: Tobias tries to make a deal with Prometheus about the Green Arrow's identity... then immediately gives it up, apparently thinking the honor system will work with this guy.
  • Internal Reveal: Oliver learns about Felicity's relationship with Billy Malone.
    • Susan Williams learns that Oliver Queen was in Russia at a time when he was supposedly stranded on Lian Yu.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: Unlike early season Ra's Al Ghul and Damian Darhk, Prometheus is not an invincible villain. He tried to kill Church for kidnapping one of Oliver's protege, but the arrow he shot was stopped by Church's hired freak. Rather than taking on Church and his new friend, Prometheus decided to run away.
  • Latex Perfection: Once of Chance's gimmicks is masks that are indistinguishable from the people he's impersonating. However when he remove his mask and Felicity plays with it, it looks nothing like Oliver. It doesn't even have his stubble beard on it.
  • Nothing Is Scarier: We don't get to see Prometheus slaughtering the cops escorting Church. We only see faces of Church and cop who escorts him when they hear screams. And they're terrified.
  • One-Man Army: Prometheus slaughters at least a dozen cops within seconds.
  • Overly Narrow Superlative: Anatoly said that he and Oliver were in the best bar in town. He then admitted that it was the only bar in town.
  • Pet the Dog: When cop goes out to face Prometheus, Church tells him not to go so he won't die. Too bad he doesn't listen.
  • Rag Tag Bunch Of Misfits: Diggle isn't initially impressed with the new recruits, but he comes around to Oliver's observation that they have potential.
  • The Reveal: Why did Church want to conquer Star City? Its harbor. He can it use to smuggle in all the drugs and narcotics he wants and then funnel them into the other four cities he has under his thumb, effectively running the most ambitious criminal empire there's ever been.
  • Shovel Strike: Rene uses the shovel he had to dig his own grave with as an improvised weapon once Oliver arrives to save him.
  • A Storm Is Coming: When he's defeated, Church warns Oliver that Prometheus is coming for him.
  • Swiss-Cheese Security: The Arrowcave's infamous examples are given a Lampshade Hanging when Diggle comes back.
Rory: Do people just walk into your secret base of operations?
    Curtis, John, and Felicity: Yes.
  • Where the Hell Is Springfield?: It is mentioned that Star City lies on the western coast, which in both the comics and the TV series is the most oft-given region of where it is located (although hardly the only one).
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: Prometheus executes Church with a ninja star to the throat once he was told the Green Arrow is Oliver Queen. That said, Tobias did say that once he told him, he would be the only one who knew.
