Recap / Arrested Development S 5 E 1 Family Leave

Go To

After doing... something... to Lucille 2 on the Cinco de Cuatro and sleeping through the next day thanks to GOB's "forget-me-nows", Michael finds out Buster has been hiding in the attic, gets punched by his own son, and finds himself on the radar of a cop investigating Lucille 2's disappearance.

Meanwhile, George Michael gets a reality check after punching his father, George and GOB reunite in Mexico and Tobias and Lucille move out of Austerity.

The Arrested Development episode "Family Leave" provides examples of:

  • Aborted Arc: George Sr's life as a woman doesn't last more than a couple of days.
  • Evolving Credits: Updated photos aside, the second shot, which usually displays the person whose legal problems are the show's focus (George Sr during the show's original run and Lucille in season 4), now shows Buster.
  • Never Got to Say Goodbye: Michael's excuse to the cop why he wrote "Love you" under his note to Lucille is that he uses this phrase whenever he means goodbye because you never know if you see that person again. Leads to a Brick Joke when he tells the cop "Love you" on his way out.
  • Nothing Is the Same Anymore: Parodied when addressing the impact of the previous season's finale:
Narrator: There are some moments that are hard to take back. Moments that create too great a shift in dynamic. An earthquake in a family that shatters both members' notions of themselves. Like when you punch your dad!
  • That Came Out Wrong: On the phone Michael tells his son to "hit him back", but quickly realizes that it wasn't probably the best expression to use.
  • The Problem with Pen Island: When Michael spells out the licence plate number of Tobias' car "A-N-U-S-T-A-R-T" to the cop, she takes it as A NEW START.
  • What Are Records?: Maeby mistakes a landline phone for a sex toy.

The previous episode can be either "Blockheads" or "Cinco De Cuatro III"
