Recap / Arrested Development S1E5 "Visiting Ours"

Go To

Needing information from George Sr.'s secretary Kitty, Michael attempts to use her crush on Gob to get it. Meanwhile, Tobias and Lindsay attend couples therapy and George Michael attempts to conquer his fear of visiting George Sr. in prison.

The Arrested Development episode "Visiting Ours" provides examples of:

  • Asshole Victim: Lucille is "humiliated" at the club, even though she arguably deserves it.
Lucille: [to a waiter] Take it back! If I wanted something your thumb touched, I'd eat the inside of your ear!
Lucille: [to Michael on the phone] You should see the looks I'm getting.
  • Delayed Reaction: Kitty when noticing her mistake of calling Lucille Michael's wife.
Narrator: Kitty realized her mistake. But not immediately.
  • Ditzy Secretary: Played With. Kitty seems to be a stereotypical ditz, but is also a lot more scheming than she seems.
  • The Drag-Along: George Michael reluctantly joins Maeby in following Lindsay and Tobias.
  • The Glasses Gotta Go/Letting Her Hair Down: Hilariously subverted when Gob is trying to seduce Kitty; removing her glasses just makes her cross-eyed, and letting down her hair makes it poof out into a tangled mess. He even tries different combinations.
  • Hellhole Prison: Played with. Even though George Sr. seems to be enjoying prison in previous episodes, he suddenly realizes that prison isn't the best place to be when another prisoner stabs a guard over a baseball game. On the other hand, the 'hellhole' side is all that George Michael sees during his visit.
  • Honey Trap: Michael makes GOB seduce Kitty (who's attracted to GOB) in order to get information about the international accounts out of her.
  • Money Dumb: Lucille demands that Michael free up more money so that she can access the golf clubhouse dining room, even though she doesn't even play golf.
  • Out of Order: Although this episode was produced and aired after "Charity Drive", it makes more sense before it, as it introduces Kitty, and makes no reference to Lucille Austero, who is introduced in "Charity Drive", and features in the plot of episodes 7 and 8. (This is the order they appear in on the DVD.)
  • Shout-Out:
  • Sleeping with the Boss: Kitty was sleeping with George Sr.
  • Primal Scene: Much to his utter horror, GOB is detained by the prison warden with his face up against the window of the trailer where George Sr. and Lucille has their conjugal visit.
  • Pun-Based Title: On "visiting hours." This is a multilingual pun as well, because Lucille and George Sr. both refer to George as a "bear." The French word for bear is ours.
  • Therapy Backfire: Lindsay and Tobias try going to couples counseling after Tobias quits his job to become an actor. A simple role-playing exercise leads to Tobias and the therapist nearly kissing and the therapist not only siding with Tobias, but also quitting his job to become an actor as well. This is something of a subversion as it's the therapist and Tobias who are portrayed as crazy.
  • Undying Loyalty: Kitty is extremely loyal to George Sr., and undermines Michael by refusing to cooperate with him in the matter of the international account documents.
