Recap / Archer S 6 E 3 The Archer Sanction

Go To

Archer, Lana, and Ray must stop an assassin at the Swiss Alps, except they have no idea who the assassin is. Back at the office, the gang celebrates Cheryl's birthday before sneaking into Malory's apartment in search of AJ.

This episode provides examples of:

  • "Assassin" Is Such An Ugly Word: Crash prefers the term "Cleaner". Ray considers it smart branding (as is the fact that he's Canadian).
  • Call-Back: Archer is always tricking Malory with elaborate voicemail hoaxes. This time, she gets him.
    • Archer deduced Crash as the assassin because he believed that Ireland was an Axis power until Lana once again reminded him that they were neutral. Archer responds with "Oh, yeah that's right."
  • Idiot Ball: As usual, Archer did not read the mission dossier and does not actually know who the target they are supposed to kill is. Lana and Ray, who by this point should know better, apparently did not do so either since they expected Archer to.
  • In-Universe Factoid Failure: Archer believed that Ireland was an Axis power during WWII. Lana soon points out the country was actually neutral. At the episode’s end, Archer believes he’s been mistaken Ireland for Romania in terms of what country counted as an Axis power.
    • Might be a mild case of Fridge Brilliance: Malory hates the Irish due to their neutral stance in WWII, as revealed in "Lo Scandolo,," and Archer initially thought she meant that they were Nazis.
  • Naked People Are Funny: Everyone has to strip naked for body heat in the tents. A lengthy discussion about where Archer and Ray's genitals should be ensues.
  • Never Found the Body/No One Could Survive That!: After recovering from the avalanche, Archer suspects Crash couldn't have survive that himself. He decides to just say he's dead.
  • Once Done, Never Forgotten: Archer keeps ribbing Ray for forgetting the gum to deal with his ears popping. (Which he didn't actually forget; he just didn't want share).
  • Operation: Jealousy: Archer accuses Lana of trying to make him jealous by hitting on the climbing instructor.
  • Remembered Too Late: Archer was able to recall what he read in the dossier (key: skimmed): Crash is the assassin they are after. Unfortunately, it was after the other climbers, revealed to be from Interpol who were trailing Crash, were killed.
  • Right for the Wrong Reasons: Archer deduces Crash as the killer, because he assumes Ireland was an Axis power in World War 2. Lana had to remind him that they were neutral, plus Crash is from Canada.
  • Sick Episode: The entire B-plot boils down to this when the drones break into Malory's apartment. They grow increasingly sick throughout and eventually discover that the place is being fumigated. It ends with Malory demanding "what fresh hell" happened while she and AJ were away as an ambulance arrives to care for them.
  • Tall, Dark, and Handsome: Both Lana and Ray are smitten when they meet Crash. The latter keeps hitting on an annoyed Crash.
  • The Tape Knew You Would Say That: When Archer contacts Malory, she demands that she talks to Lana. Archer refuses and rants how he'll lose authority for the mission. And then...
    Malory: ...Are you finished?
    Archer: Yes.
    Malory: Good, because...
Computer Voice: ...The mailbox belonging to Elaborate Voicemail Hoax is full. Goodbye. *click*
Lana: Huh. I guess you had that coming.
    Archer: How so?!
  • Villain Has a Point: Though Archer shot Crash in order to save Lana, Crash warned him a moment earlier that firing a gun where they were guarantees an avalanche. And it did.
Archer: Well, Paddy... If there's one thing I've learned... It's that there are no guarantees in this crazy world...
