Recap / Archer S 5 E 5 Archer Vice Southbound And Down

Go To

With Cherlene on the verge of discovery, Archer pays for an extravagant tour bus to get the gang to Texas for her debut performance. Things go off the rails when he lets slip to Pam that a shipment of cocaine has been smuggled onto the bus for distribution over state lines.

This episode provides examples of:

  • All Bikers are Hells Angels: After Pam tells some bikers about the cocaine their carrying, they attack Cherlene's tour bus.
  • Ascended Fanboy: Archer gets a tour bus and blocker car to emulate Smokey and the Bandit.
  • Conspiracy Theorist: Malory reveals herself to be one, on the subject of PBS:
Malory: It’s public television. They don’t pay anything! All they do is suck money in. They take our taxes...
    Lana: Or donations. Whatever.
Malory: Of pre-tax dollars! From pot-taking, Bolshevik lesbian couples! Then PBS mixes it all in with their huge NEA grants, launders it in inner-city methadone clinics, and pumps it right back out to pro-abortion super-PACs!
    Lana: ...Still no words.
  • Death Glare: When the bikers start shooting at the tour bus and Archer is trying to find his gun note  to shoot back, Pam asks him if he’s sure he brought it. If looks could kill...
  • Gasshole: Pam sticks her hat in Archer’s face right before he inhales...
Archer: Oh, Jesus, did you fart in that?!?
  • Greed: Malory's manager contract gives her fifty percent of Cherlene's profits.
  • The Millstone: Pam, once again. She tranquilizes Archer because she didn't like how he was driving, told a bunch of violent bikers about how they're smuggling cocaine, and lost Archer's gun while playing craps so when the bikers tried to rob them he had nothing to fight back with. To top it off, she's forced to throw out the cocaine to throw off the cops.
  • One-Take Wonder: In-Universe. Cherlene tries to invoke this when she prefers to have an air of "mystique" playing just one song, and then it's ultimately subverted when Malory signs a music contract.
  • Serial Numbers Filed Off: In-Universe: Cherlene goes to Texas to sing at "Travis County Limits", which Malory repeatedly describes as being "comparable" to Austin City Limits. Both are PBS programs (hence Malory's PBS conspiracy theory, with the "They don’t pay anything!" line also apparently applying to Charlene). Also, Austin, TX, is the county seat of Travis County, TX.
  • Shout-Out: The title is one to the theme song of Smokey and the Bandit, and there are several other references to the film as well.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: Despite Archer covering for her, Pam not only acts like a jerk to him but also tells Malory that he lost the cocaine he was carrying.
    • When Krieger reboots Ray's cyborg legs, Ray yells at him for not doing it sooner, prompting Krieger to shut them off until Ray expresses gratitude. Then again, Krieger purposely delayed the fix because Ray would feel happier.
  • Weight Woe: Pam reveals that she likes being addicted to cocaine because it gave her a skinnier, more attractive body. Archer tells her that he preferred her the way she was before, as "they hated her less."
