Recap / Archer S 4 E 1 Fugue And Riffs

Go To

Archer finds himself working at his own burger joint under the name Bob Belcher with a wife named Linda and three kids named Tina, Louise, and Gene. He doesn't remember what happened to him or who he is, but knows that KGB agents are after him and he, for some reason, has the combat skills of a secret agent.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Actor Allusion: The entire fugue state is basically one massive allusion to H. Jon Benjamin's voicework as both Sterling Archer and Bob Belcher from Bob's Burgers. There are some minor allusions to the latter show too (Bob-as-Archer always thinking up various recipes and puns for food, he's wearing a similar moustache, bad puns on the menu etc.). Similarly, Linda is also voiced by their original VA; John Roberts.
  • Back to Front: The start of the episode begins with Archer under his fugue state persona Bob Belcher. When he recovers, the climax reveals why he ended up like this: his mother got married to a new man named Ron Cadillac and, drunk out of his mind, he hijacked a limousine meant for them.
  • Brick Joke: Cheryl mentions earlier in the episode that she's high on LSD gummi bears. One of the final shots of the episode shows an ostrich suddenly appearing, and Cheryl runs away screaming.
  • Call-Back: Archer puts liquor bottle labels on Lana's breasts as a callback to last season's finale.
  • Crossover: With Bob's Burgers, in an odd sort of way. Archer gets wasted at Malory's wedding, steals a limousine, and enters a fugue state where he becomes the stepfather to three kids and marries Linda in the span of two months, while also growing a moustache and learning how to make burgers.
  • Cutting Back to Reality: At the very end, a talking ostrich randomly appears next to Archer and Lana, prompting a terrified scream from Cheryl. Once she's finished screaming, we cut away from her reaction and back to a wide shot of Archer and the others; the ostrich is nowhere in sight.
  • Do Not Call Me "Paul": Archer thinks his name is Bob Belcher due to Identity Amnesia and refuses to be called by his real name.
Archer: Jesus, Mary, and Joseph Stalin! For the last time, assholes, my name is-
    [KGB agents open fire]
    Archer: SHAZAM!
  • Easy Amnesia: Archer loses all conscious memory of who he is during his fugue state. Despite Krieger's insistence that they can't just "whang him in the head" to fix it that's exactly what Lana does to finally get him back to normal.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: After Bob slaughters the KGB attack squad, the Belchers watch in gape-jawed horror...except Louise, who has a sly, admiring smile.
  • Impact Silhouette: When "Bob" convinces himself he's secretly a badass hand-to-hand combatant, Lana invites him to try to attack him. Her counterattack leaves an Archer-shaped impression in the wall.
  • Irony: In flashback, when Archer hijacks the limousine from Malory and Ron's wedding:
    Malory: Son of a bitch!
    Pam: Your words...
  • Lampshaded the Obscure Reference: The writers seem to be aware that the Shout Out to the Thomas Hambledon spy novels was a pretty deep cut... although the amnesiac main character does have parallels with Archer's situation.
Archer: OK, kids, who wants hambledurgers? And/or an explanation of why that's funny?
  • Shout-Out:
  • Trauma-Induced Amnesia: Archer's fugue state leads to him completely forgetting who he is because of how traumatic it was to see his mother marry someone. The opening scene makes it clear he still has all his combat skills, even if he doesn't know he has them.
  • Unrelated in the Adaptation: In Bob's Burgers, Bob Belcher is the biological father of Tina, Gene, and Louise. In the Archer-verse, Archer-as-Bob is the kids' stepfather.
  • The Voiceless" The Archer versions of Tina, Gene, and Louise don't say anything at all, strangely enough. Ironically, their voice actors would later return to voice Archer-only characters in "Sea Tunt".
