Recap / Archer S 2 E 6 Tragical History

Go To

Cyril agrees to help a mysterious man named George Spelvin inject a computer virus into the ISIS mainframe so Cyril can "defeat" it and be seen as a hero. Not surprisingly, the plan goes awry: Cyril didn't count on sexy, bikini-clad ninjas.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Affably Evil: When Archer comments that both Spelvin and the twins have swords, Spelvin good-naturedly agrees to let him have one too.
  • Butt-Monkey: This episode highlights and does nothing to fix Cyril's status as this.
  • Corrupted Contingency: George Spelvin tricks Cyril Figgis into uploading a computer virus onto the ISIS computer mainframe, with the intent of stealing the information of every agent working for ISIS. They try turning off the mainframe but it has a backup battery protected by a two-ton steel door whose lock is controlled by the virus-infected mainframe.
  • Dragon Lady: The sexy ninja twins.
Archer: [fighting off the twins] I thought you said they were sexy!
    Cyril: Ninjas are sexy!
    Spelvin: Right?
  • Dude, Where's My Respect?: Cyril deals with this throughout the episode, and a reason behind becoming part of Spelvin's plans.
  • Ear Worm: As damaging as the worm software is, it has a pretty catchy tune, as Pam and Cheryl can attest to.
    Hunch Hunch!
    What whaaat!
    Buh boh!
  • Engineered Heroism: Cyril is originally led to believe that the code Spelvin gave him would disable the harmless pirate virus, making him look like a hero to the ISIS team, but no one would even allow him to try. Spelvin lied, the virus is real and designed to penetrate the mainframe to steal the field agent list.
  • Exactly What I Aimed At: All of Cyrils gunshots missed Spelvin and his ninjas, much to Archer's annoyance, but destroyed the server holding the agents list.
  • Graceful Loser: Spelvin decides to not call Cyril's bluff with the empty pistol, accepts defeat and leaves with his dignity intact.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: Pam's key ring contains Sora's Kingdom Key. note
  • Meaningful Name: "George Spelvin" is a long-standing pseudonym used in live theatre cast lists for characters that never appear on-stage or union actors appearing in non-union productions.
  • Running Gag: "...Do you not?"
  • Weapon for Intimidation/It Works Better with Bullets: Cyril successfully bluffs Spelvin into giving up after claiming that he has one bullet left, not enough to kill him and the ninja twins, but just him. Archer takes the gun later and tries it himself, confirming that there were no bullets at all.
