Tropes:

  • Ascended Extra: Maddie’s triplet sisters Rosemary, Lavender and Ginger get focus in this episode.
  • Attack of the 50-Foot Whatever: Maddie's sisters try to make themselves "grown up" with a growing spell that turns them into giants. Unfortunately, because they cast the spell improperly, Maddie has to undo it before they grow too large and explode. Maddie also becomes large to help shrink them down.
  • Babysitting Episode: The episode's plot is about Maddie being forced to keep an eye on her pollywog sisters Rosemary, Lavender, and Ginger.
  • Birds of a Feather: Marcy and Maddie quickly become friends thanks to their love of bizarre biology and researching.
  • Breather Episode: This is the last episode of the four-episode break before it's time for Anne and crew to go to the second temple in the next episode.
  • Cartoon Juggling: Maddie used to do this with her sisters as a way to play with them.
  • Company Cross References: The pot in which Maddie's sisters make the growth spell has "hunny" spelled on it.
  • Continuity Nod: Polly is easily swayed to be part of an angry mob again just like in "New Wartwood."
  • A Day in the Limelight: As per the episode title, Maddie and Marcy are the main characters of the episode, though Maddie's sisters play a large part.
  • Exactly What It Says on the Tin: The tadpole sisters create a growth potion. They think it'll make them grow older, but it just makes them bigger. Unfortunately, the potion they brewed is unstable and Maddie says that if she and Marcy can't stop it, they'll eventually explode.
  • Family Theme Naming: Maddie's younger sisters are all named after spices.
  • Giant's Droplet, Human's Shower: When Maddie's sisters use an unstable growth potion on themselves, they have fun until they realize that they have made a mistake. Not knowing what else to do, the girls cry Ocular Gushers that drench the town in waterfalls.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Maddie's sisters grow jealous of her hanging out with Marcy instead of them.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: Anne and Sprig appear in one scene where they're watching a show on Anne's phone, commenting on how the episode they're watching doesn't feature the main characters.
Anne: Eh, you don't miss 'em.
  • Mistaken for Undead: The girls mistake a gruff-looking Hop Pop for a dead body when they're looking for one.
Hop Pop: Did you girls just mistake me for a corpse?!
Marcy: Of corpse not, Hop Pop!
(girls scamper off as he hucks a shoe at them)
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Maddie realizes that it's her fault that her sisters made themselves grow larger because she kept telling them to "grow up".
  • Open-Minded Parent: Mr. Flour is pretty okay with his daughter being invested in witchcraft and isn't too fazed with what she's capable of doing, with just one condition:
Maddie: I'm gonna kill [my sisters]!
Mr. Flour: Make sure you resurrect them when you're done!
  • Out of Focus: Anne, Sprig, and Hop Pop only get about one line each and Polly briefly appears but has no lines. As mentioned above, it gets lampshaded.
  • Resized Vocals: After growing huge, Maddie's sisters' voices get a low deep pitch. The same thing happens to Maddie after she takes the growth potion. After the siblings are shrunk back down, their voices change back to normal.
  • Shout-Out:
    • The page on Maddie's spell book on resurrecting the dead has a picture of a frog dancing with a top hat.
    • Marcy's "Cynthia Coven and the Sorcerer's Step Ladder" book takes several inspirations from Harry Potter: its teen protagonist wears glasses and uses a wand, the title is similar to the American version of the first in the series, and the font on the cover includes a lightning bolt reminiscent of Harry's scar.
    • The pot Maddie's sisters use to mix their growing spell has "HUNNY" written on it.
    • When the flea Maddie is trying to reanimate twitches, Marcy shouts "It's alive! It's alive!" while lightning crackles in the background. For bonus points, Fleafi is covered in stitches and has bolts in its neck.
  • Smurfing: Upon noticing Maddie doing magic, Marcy shouts "No frogging way!"
  • Strolling Through the Chaos: While Maddie's sisters are rampaging through town, Anne and Sprig are seen relaxing at home, unaware of what's going on.
  • Vomit Indiscretion Shot: Maddie and Marcy get puked on when trying to collect the bile of the aptly-named "vomit bird".
  • When Trees Attack: When Maddie's sisters spill her potion on a tree, it comes to life and attacks them.
