Recap / American Dad! S14E16 "The Bitchin' Race"

Go To

Stan, Francine, Hayley, Steve, and Roger are finalists on a reality show called The Bitchin' Race. Stan and Hayley wish their respective partners, Francine and Steve, would take the race seriously.

Tropes:

  • As Himself: The Amazing Race host Phil Keoghan, travel writer Rick Steves, survivalist Bear Grylls, and reality show actor Johnny Bananas appear as themselves.
  • Back from the Dead: One of the contestants is a boy named Justin, who supposedly died and went to Heaven before returning. He is considered the audience favorite of the season.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: Stan and Hayley become partners because they find Francine and Steve to be too lackadaisical and carefree. However, their drive to win leads to them misreading a clue and ending up in a Thai rebel camp.
  • Bittersweet Ending: While Francine and Steve end up rescuing Stan and Hayley, no one actually wins the race. But Klaus does get a hot-air balloon ride.
  • Bread, Eggs, Milk, Squick: Francine took up drawing caricatures of Stan at the various legs of the race, including Paris, Cairo, and Auschwitz.
  • Call-Back: The diminutive Thai general from "CIAPOW" returns, running the rebel camp that Stan and Hayley end up in.
  • Chekhov's Gun: The herd of yaks originally belonged to the Thai general. Francine and Steve return them to him in order to secure Stan and Hayley's release.
  • Comically Missing the Point: When Hayley is trying to find a cab in Tunisia.
Hayley: Where are all the cabs?! What is wrong with this country?!
Steve: (takes out a restaurant pager) Maybe it's for the best. Our table's ready at the Hard Rock.
Hayley: We're not going to the Hard Rock! We've got a race to win!
Steve: But, some of the pins they won't let you buy unless you eat there.
  • Explain, Explain... Oh, Crap!: Stan and Hayley assume the rebel camp is part of the finale, but realize the truth when they're being forced to dig their own graves.
  • Hero Stole My Bike: Stan and Francine get into a random Tunisian man's car thinking it's a taxi.
Stan: Wait, are you not a cab driver?
Driver: Wait, are you not carjackers?
(Stan, Francine, and the driver begin laughing. As the driver slows, Stan takes out his gun.)
Stan: (dead serious) I didn't say slow down.
  • Insane Troll Logic: Stan and Hayley misread a clue that says "Find the Big Gorge" as "Find the Big George." When they find some random guy in the middle of the jungle, they assume he must be "George" and "big" must mean "he has a big dick."
  • Messianic Archetype: Justin spends much of the race talking about Heaven. He trusts God to help him with a puzzle, but completely fails.
  • No Challenge Equals No Satisfaction: Experts Rick Steves and Bear Grylls have won every leg of the race so far, with the latter noting it hasn't been particularly enjoyable.
  • Noodle Incident: Stan and Hayley end up with Francine and Steve because everyone else they know is at Dick's bachelor party, even Jeff.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: Stan invokes an alliance perk to allow him and Hayley to sabotage Rick and Bear. The show then cuts to commercial and Klaus changes channels. When he remembers to switch back, Stan and Hayley have already knocked out the experts and put them on a plane to Antarctica. The only thing we know is that Rick was harder to choke out than Bear, the survivalist.
  • Only Sane Man: Despite seemingly being the slower and more leisurely half of their respective pairs, Francine and Steve end up being the balancing side against Stan and Hayley's impulsive desire to win.
    • While in Tunisia, Francine points out to Stan that they didn't get into a taxi, but just hopped into a random guy's car.
    • One checkpoint gives the contestants a choice between herding yaks or getting a back massage. Steve may be too focused on collecting souvenirs, but he points out that there's no reason to suspect he and Hayley can corral a herd of yaks.
  • Pet the Dog: Somehow, Klaus gets the hot-air balloon ride that the show's finale had promised.
  • Product Placement: Parodied. The race includes one-time perks sponsored by Dollar Shave Club, Tostitos, and Rocket Mortgage.
  • Russian Roulette: Every afternoon at 3:30, Klaus loads a revolver and puts it against his head.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Everyone ends up abandoning the race during the final leg in Thailand. Meredith leaves her son Justin when he gets stuck on a puzzle. After realizing that they're not the stars of the season, Roger and Johnny Bananas join a karaoke competition. When he fails to convince Francine and Steve to just win the race, Phil Keoghan invokes a pass that allows him to go home to his cat.
  • Self-Deprecation: At one point, Klaus flips through the channels and finds a ski jumping competition. He remarks that, when you're not doing it yourself, ski jumping is incredibly boring.
  • Serious Business: Stan and Hayley have an almost pathological drive to win the race while Francine treats it as a second honeymoon and Steve is obsessed with collecting knickknacks.
  • Show Within a Show: The Bitchin' Race, a parody of The Amazing Race. Much of the episode plays out like it's actually the finale of the reality show.
  • Time Skip: Two weeks pass before Francine and Steve are confronted by Phil Keoghan. Francine even says she cannot account for most of that time.
  • Too Kinky to Torture: Implied with Rick Steves. Hayley remarks that he was harder to choke out than Bear Grylls, to which Stan replies "He smiled the whole time and would not break eye contact."
