Recap / Alfred J Kwak S 2 E 12 De Burenruzie

Go To

Continues from De Ontvoering (An Invitation From The Prince)

Alfred and his friends escape, together with the prince of Salam, who is in love with the princess of Yil and has her abducted. Love is mutual and the king of Salam sees little harm in this, but the king of Yil is not nearly as indulgent.

Tropes:

  • Assassin Outclassin': Budor disarms the would-be assassin with a slap and he runs away. Granted, he was shocked to see his princess in there.
  • Anvilicious: Alfred lectures a bunch of middle easteners about their own religions.
  • Stop, or I Shoot Myself!: Budor tells her father that if he has Shallaman executed, she will commit suicide.
  • Cloth Fu: Alfred blinds a soldier with the veil he was wearing.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Shallaman's reaction to the war.
  • War Is Hell: None of the scenes in the war sequence actually show anybody dying, but they get the message across and Shallaman calls the death toll enormous. In the scene immediately after where he talks to Alfred, a city has been bombed to hell and we see three Salem soldiers sitting in the ruins. The soldier on the left has no visible injuries (though only his head is visible), but seems to be done psychologically. The soldier in the middle has his arm in a sling and at least one leg bandaged (something could be missing, the entire foot isn't seen and the other leg is hidden by a wall piece), and either something has happened to his eyes or he's just squeezing them shut. The soldier on the right also has his arm in a sling and he's looking up with the entire top of his head bandaged, very possibly a victim of Eye Scream.
  • Artistic License – Military: The armada of bombers in the war scenes look like passenger planes, with their tiny and numerous windows in the sides. They presumably aren't because there's so many of them at once and they're in the middle of military action.
  • Bad Boss: The king of Yil is constantly manhandling his servant in anger about Budor's abduction/betrayal.
  • Bystander Syndrome: Everybody sits in place and stares in shock as an Yil assassin tries to stab prince Shallaman. The assassin even manages to escape the scene of the failed attempt without anybody lifting a finger.
  • Conspicuously Public Assassination: Stabbing in the middle of a large crowd (maybe over a hundred people) during a party.
  • Assassination Attempt: The king of Yil sends an assassin to kill prince Shallaman, but he fails.
  • Dark Is Evil: The Yil assassin at Shallaman's ceremony has darker colored fur than any other goats present.
  • As You Know: As Shallaman knows, his father had already been loooking for wife candidates for him.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: About halfway through the episode, at the beginning of Shallaman's ceremony, the shot of Alfred, Stoppel, and Kell shows what appears to be K. Rokodil sitting behind them.
  • Missing Mom: There's no sign or mention of neither Shallaman's nor Budor's mother.
  • Vague Age: The king of Salem says that Alfred is about the same age with Shallaman, who's just now having his coming-of-age ceremony. It's unknown what age the ceremony is held at, but it again calls to the question just how young Alfred actually is, and in relation to that how old are other characters like Dolf and Ollie who are about Alfred's age.
  • Pink Means Feminine: Princess Budor is dressd entirely in pink.
  • Bound and Gagged: The tower guard.
  • Big Ball of Violence: When Shallaman's bodyguards fight a prison guard in the guard tower.
  • Secret-Keeper: Given that Shallaman had two bodyguards with him when he entered Yil (and propably also had one in Yilsalem), at least two people must have been privy to his and Budor's relationship and kept quiet about it.
  • In the scene where the third rider is climbing the rock formation, the two other two riders are shown sitting at separate saddles holding separate ropes, but there's only one camel head. There's also the fact that they only had four camels and three of them are being ridden by the others.
  • The Cavalry: Prince Shallaman's bodyguards break him out of prison and allow Alfred, Stoppel, and professor Kell to tag along.
  • Dub Name Change:
    • Princess Budor is named Mirha in the finnish dub.
    • Yilsalem is called Jalla-Salam in the finnish dub (but is still a combo of the finnish names of Yil and Salem).
  • Shot at Dawn: The head guard intends to do this to Alfred, Stoppel, professor Kell, and the disguised prince Shallaman.
  • Hiding in a Hijab: When he and Shallaman take princess Budor to Yil, Alfred disguises himself with a veil that's propably either a niqab or a burqa. Presumably this also serves to hide his species - he's a duck, while the population of both Salem and Yil appears to consist entirely of goats.
  • Surprisingly Happy Ending: The easy with which the centuries-long conflict is solved stretches believability. Yil and Salem are combined into one just like that, and Shallaman and Budor are even allowed to marry. All of this in spite of centuries of religious conflict and a horribly devastating war that was going on at that very moment. The people of Yil even seem happy about the idea of joining together with Salem.
  • Throat-Slitting Gesture: The jailer does a blink-and-miss one after he has revealed he's the prison commander, and telling Stoppel they will be executed quickly.
  • Spoiler Title: "Love unites".
