Recap / Adventures Of Sonic The Hedgehog S 01 E 21 Momma Robotnik Returns

Go To

The twenty-first episode of Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog.

Momma Robotnik escapes again from the Mobius Home for Really Bizarre People, disowns Robotnik for failing to capture Sonic, then with the help of an obscure Mobius law, adopts Sonic. Sonic is miserable as a Cinderella hedgehog with Scratch and Grounder as the evil stepbots, until Robotnik and Coconuts find another obscure law which frees Sonic.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Abusive Parents: Momma's status as this is perhaps best exemplified in this episode; she disowns Robotnik for failing to stop Sonic and overtakes his evil plan to control all electronic devices on Mobius. She also adopts Sonic and Tails, making the former her slave and the latter her prisoner, and like Robotnik, she assigns Coconuts to sewer patrol.
  • Beehive Hairdo: Parodied; Miss Sniffed, the social worker comes to inspect Robotnik's fortress, and not only does she have a beehive hairdo, but real bees buzzing around it, and a hole for them to fly into.
  • Cinderella Plot: A variant; when Momma adopts Sonic, she has him do all the chores in Robotnik's fortress (save for sewer patrol, which she assigns Coconuts to) and orders Scratch and Grounder to stop him. Although there is no dance, fairy godparent, or love interest involved in the episode, things fortunately do get better for Sonic when Robotnik and Coconuts rat Momma out to Miss Sniffed.
  • Comically Missing the Point: After Momma is stopped, Robotnik instantly turns on Scratch and Grounder, furious that the two turned on him and helped his mother, leading to this:
Robotnik: Now, whose brilliant idea was it to betray me and help my Momma?!
Scratch: It was rather brilliant, wasn't it?
Grounder: [bows] I thought of it! You can thank me!
Robotnik: I'LL THANK YOU, ALL RIGHT!!! [grabs them and starts smashing their heads together]
  • Department of Child Disservices: Averted; Sonic is temporarily put into the custody of Momma Robotnik, but Miss Sniffed annuls the adoption when it's revealed that Momma Robotnik disowned her own son.
  • The Dog Bites Back: Both Robotnik and Coconuts rat Momma out to Miss Sniffed as retribution for disowning the former and putting the latter on sewer patrol.
  • Fantastic Aesop: This episode has Tails disobey a "No Flying" sign. Sonic heavily scolds him for it, and at the "Sonic Says" at the end, Tails even has to go to the juvenile office for it (and is ordered not to fly for a whole month). The moral is supposed to be "obey every law". We see quite a few avian characters throughout the show (heck, the judge in this episode is an owl), so the law probably applies to them as well.
  • Girls With Mustaches: Played with; starting from this episode, Momma Robotnik doesn't have her own mustache anymore. Near the end of the episode, Sonic pulls Robotnik's mustache off his face and puts it on Momma's to prove to Miss Sniffed that they're related.
  • Hold Up Your Score: After Momma literally kicks Robotnik out of his fortress, Robotnik bounces off a tree, slams into a wall, and lands in a mud puddle. Scratch and Grounder watch this happen, and hold up score cards. Scratch rates Robotnik an 8.5, and Grounder rates him a 9.8.
  • I Have No Son!: Momma disowns and kicks out Robotnik after he fails to catch Sonic one too many times.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Scratch and Grounder happily betray Robotnik for Momma and spend most of the episode harassing and taunting Sonic while sabotaging his attempts to do chores. This bites them in the ass then they, while fiddling with the Rapid Robot Rendering Machine they forced Sonic to clean for them, Sonic yanks them into the machine, leading them to be compacted into cubes. At the end of the episode, when Momma is overthrown, Robotnik also gives them one of his usual beatings for betraying him in the first place.
  • Near-Villain Victory: When Momma becomes Sonic and Tails' legal guardian, Sonic is practically helpless to stop her from taking over Mobius with a supercomputer, since she takes Tails hostage. Sonic has to be saved by Coconuts and none other than Robotnik himself, both of whom rat her out to Miss Sniffed to avenge her mistreatment of them.
  • Put Their Heads Together: After Momma is overthrown, Robotnik punishes Scratch and Grounder for betraying him by grabbing them by the necks and smashing their heads together repeatedly.
  • Rhetorical Question Blunder: When Robotnik makes a deal with Coconuts:
Robotnik: Help me, and I'll put you in charge of Grounder and Scratch.
    Coconuts: Promise? Promise? Whoa-ho-ho! Promise?
Robotnik: Have I ever lied to you before?
Coconuts: Sure. Uh, lots of times.
    Robotnik: Never mind!
  • Trap Door: Tails' prison cell has one that opens if Sonic doesn't do as Momma says, and to ensure Tails can't fly over it, Momma chained his two tails together.
  • Turned Against Their Masters: Scratch and Grounder betray Robotnik for Momma, who disowns him, kicks him out of his lair, and overtakes his evil plan to control all electronic devices on Mobius. Only Coconuts remained loyal to Robotnik, to the point of helping him overthrow Momma. When things are settled, Robotnik wastes no time giving Scratch and Grounder a beating for stabbing him in the back.
  • The Unfavorite:
    • Coconuts, as usual. After Momma kicks Robotnik out of his fortress, she has Scratch and Grounder join her. Coconuts wants to join as well, so he can get off of sewer patrol, and the first thing Momma does when she lets him join is assign him sewer patrol. This leads to Coconuts betraying her and helping Robotnik overthrow her.
    • Sonic and Tails also fall into this while under Momma's custody. Momma makes Tails her prisoner and Sonic her slave, giving Sonic all the chores and even hiring Scratch and Grounder to sabotage his efforts, and threatening to send Tails down a trap door unless Sonic does as she says (and to ensure Tails can't fly over it, she chains up his two tails).
