Psychoanalysis aside, this scene in She-Ra accurately depicts how a horse girl sees a horse, Nature’s most majestic and volatile achievement. Horses are beautiful, and sensitive, and dumb as rocks, and frightened of life. They are like large dogs with sharp feet, and as a little girl I lived for them.

"The stallion only an orphan boy could ride”... presumably because there aren’t any pesky parents around to press charges when the kid is flung from his back? Your guess is as good as mine, really.

Reviewers grumbled about “beauty shots” and pacing and Oh Come On and Bored Now. Horse girls had no such objections. We knew exactly what she was feeling when she galloped across those beaches on that amazing goldy-pink horse.

You might think that the range of horse books would be narrow, but, like an artist working only in black, reading only one genre— or not really genre but fictive subject— reveals just how many iterations there can be of a thing. If there is, by necessity, some overlap in plot, horse books otherwise offer a surprising breadth: of style, setting, and tone.
