(Rin-sayara, rinaru-sa, sayara…)
(Rin-sayara, rinaru-sa, sayara…)

As you stare at the endless sky
You just cried now
What you hold in your clasped hand
Is the single petal of a flower

The gentle wind that blows
Wipes away the tears

In this scenery that you have seen
I'll live on forever and ever
And if the world should come to an end
I'll become a flower and snuggle up to you
— "Flower on the Trails" by LieN, main theme of Fuga: Melodies of Steel (roughly translated from Japanese)

Developer interviews and other quotes

"Whenever we have an internal testing session, I always play the game myself and tell the development team what I think of it. (…) I gave them very detailed instructions on what elements to adjust. We then determined the optimal values by comparing them with the data of thirty monitored participants at the same time. Then, we began to see various trends. The results of the internal testing sessions and the results of the Japanese players' choices after release were in perfect agreement [on who to sacrifice for the Soul Cannon]— Boron in first place, Socks in second place, and Malt in third place. It seems that everyone tends to think that fat guys and glasses are not useful. In particular, Boron's fat appearance gave the impression that he was the most useless, the most likely to eat all the food, and the most slow-witted, so he often became a victim. But if you played Fuga, you know that Boron is actually the strongest character.

"The results were different in the United States. It seems that many American players had a completely different sense of choice than the Japanese— it seems that 'fat = useless' is a uniquely Japanese viewpoint. The most frequent victims [for the Soul Cannon] were instead Mei in first place, Socks in second place, and Malt in third place. When I saw these results, I couldn't help but think, 'don't Americans have a heart?' But there seems to be a good reason for this result.

"It seems that Americans have a closer relationship with war than the Japanese do. Firstly, the most frequent reason why Mei (four years old)— Malt's little sister— was chosen was based on the logic of, 'Children are useless in war, and the ones who can't fight will die first, so it's better to choose her than let everyone else die.' It's quite the calculated decision. Incidentally, it seems that Socks was chosen for the same reason (he appears weak), but it seems that Americans have an image of 'fat (as in heavy) = strong'. Therefore, Boron would never be sacrificed. However, the reason why Malt achieved third place was almost the same as with Japanese players— 'you're the leader, so you deal with it'— hence why Malt was put into the Soul Cannon.

"It's fascinating to see the differences in mindset between countries."

Famitsu editor: What did you think of the first Soul Cannon ranking for Fuga?
Hiroshi Matsuyama: It was an interesting result. By the way, my first choice was Mei. No reason. That's just how it was.
