Quotes / Both Sides Have a Point

Go To

In Mage, the battle between the Traditions and the Technocracy is supposed to be one of moral greyness. Neither side is 100% right or wrong. Instead they represent the eternal debate between Personal Freedom (the Traditions) and Public Responsibility (the Union). Each side has its pros and its cons, and both tend to work best when balanced with the other. Without responsibility, freedom becomes selfishness and the world goes to hell as people care only about themselves. Without freedom, responsibility becomes paternalism, locking the world in a prison "for its own good."
Mage: The Ascension - Storyteller's Handbook (revised)

Ai: I don't see how any of what I said was wrong.
Yugiri: There are plenty of fights that start because both sides have a good point.
— Discussing the feud between Ai and Junko, Zombie Land Saga

Frankly I think they're both at fault, but they also both have points.
Yuna on the feud between Matsuri and Miyu, Kindred Spirits on the Roof

"Arthur, D.W., we have both thought about what you both did to each other. Arthur, hitting D.W. like that was wrong, and you should think before you act; and D.W., you should have listened to Arthur when he said no; you have been told several times by us that when someone says no, they mean no. As a result, both of you have earned no TV for a week."
Mr. Read, Retelling of "Arthur's Big Hit"

Both optimists and pessimists contribute to our society. The optimist invents the airplane and the pessimist the parachute.
G. B. Stern

"Should you have blown up her car? No! Should you have refused her apology and joined up with Shay Van Buren? Fuck no! But what's done is done, and we can't change the past. All we can do is accept the reality of the situation we find ourselves in today."
Trisha Cappelletti to Mackenzie Zales and Brittnay Matthews, The Most Popular Girls in School ("End of the Year Party, Part 3")

Superman: Give me one good reason not to go down there and take [Cadmus] out.
J'onn J'onzz: If you didn't know the answer, you wouldn't have bothered to ask.
Superman: Don't handle me J'ohn. I'm serious.
J'ohn: We don't have hard evidence they've committed any crimes.
Superman: Oh come on! You know they're dirty!
Green Arrow: Then maybe we should put more energy into proving it and less into acting like a bunch of hyperthyroid storm troopers.
Superman: I don't remember asking you for your opinion.
Green Arrow: No? How about when you guys hijacked me up here against my will and made me join this team? Batman said I was supposed to keep you guys honest.
Superman: Do I look like Batman to you?
The Flash: Actually, you kind of do. Especially when you're all "scowly" like that.
Superman: We can't let Cadmus get away with it!
J'ohn: No one's saying we should, but we have to keep a cool head.
Supergirl: Do you know what they did to me?
Green Arrow: Look kid. Hamilton's a piece of garbage, Luthor is worse, but this isn't the way to stop them.
J'ohn: We must also consider the possibility that Cadmus is right to be afraid of us.
Supergirl: What!?
J'ohn: And there is strong evidence of Cadmus having legitimate connections to the government.
Superman: Maybe to some rogue Black-Ops group, but the real government wouldn't get involved in anything like this!
Green Arrow: Hey, I'm the only guy in the room who doesn't have superpowers and let me tell you, you guys scare me. What if you do decide to go marching down there, taking care of whoever you think is guilty? Who could stop you? Me?
Supergirl: So you want the government to have a bunch of superhuman weapons just to keep us in check?
Green Arrow: No! I don't know... Yeah!
[Superman and Supergirl give Green Arrow a disapproving glare]
Green Arrow: Look, I'm an old lefty. The government must do for people what can't do for themselves. The people sure can't protect themselves from the likes of us!
Superman: We're not talking about the government. We're talking about a shadow cabinet that's taken it upon themselves to eliminate us! They came after us, we have to hit them back hard!
The Flash: Grammy Flash always used to say, "The trouble with "an eye for an eye" is that everyone ends up blind".

"Ability cannot be measured by the possession of a Crest alone. I believe that Margrave Gautier was wrong to disinherit Miklan simply because he did not bear a Crest. Still, there is always a reason for why such customs stand the test of time. Imagine what this world would be like if no one placed any stock in Crests... Bloodlines that carry Crests would dwindle. The metaphorical blade used to oppose threats would eventually rust. This same argument has been made time and time again across the years. Both sides are at once right and wrong."

Henry Peter Gyrich: Some scientist. Because you couldn't control your creations, we've got to hide in this stinking jungle for the rest of our lives!
Bolivar Trask: You were the one who wanted to kidnap Kelly. He's why we're here. Mastermold was perfect!
Henry Peter Gyrich: Yeah, so perfect he turned on us, or have you forgotten?

The way I see it, Tak, Kuwana's makin' sense, too. Just consider it, but, is there really a right answer here?
Masaharu Kaito, Lost Judgment
