Basic Trope: A married character can't stand their spouse.

  • Straight: Bob is married to Alice but hates her and wishes they weren't married.
  • Exaggerated: Bob continuously plots to murder Alice or at least make her miserable.
  • Downplayed: Bob doesn't really feel anything for Alice, but for some reason (religious, political, financial, etc.) can't leave her.
  • Justified:
  • Inverted: Bob and Alice are Happily Married.
  • Subverted: For the first year of marriage Bob hates his wife Alice because of how abrasive she is, but after she saves him from drowning, he learns to appreciate her better qualities, and they fall in love for real.
  • Double Subverted: At least it seemed that way, but then Alice walked in on Bob cheating on her.
  • Parodied: ???
  • Zig Zagged: ???
  • Averted: Nobody is in an unhappy marriage.
  • Enforced: ???
  • Lampshaded: "If you hate Alice so much, why don't you just divorce her?"
  • Invoked: Bob's father Gerald hates him, so when the time comes to arrange a marriage for his son, he picks a wife he knows Bob will hate.
  • Exploited: Carissa had a crush on Bob since they were children, so she seeks to become Bob's lover by reminding him how much he hates his wife.
  • Defied:
    • Bob takes his own life in an attempt to escape his marriage to Alice.
    • Alice refuses to marry Bob because he does not love her.
    • They get divorced (or annul their marriage, or merely separate) after it's clear they don't love each other.
  • Discussed: "Bob's married? I bet five bucks it's a loveless marriage".
  • Conversed: "Why'd you even get married if you didn't love each other?"
