Basic Trope: A character makes an embarrassing mistake and is humiliated for it.

  • Straight: Bob slips and falls into a puddle. Passers-by stop to laugh at his misfortune.
  • Exaggerated: Bob slips and falls into a puddle. It ends up on live TV for the entire world to laugh at.
  • Downplayed: Bob slips and falls into a puddle. A few people chuckle at the scene while continuing to walk past.
  • Justified:
    • Bob did something really embarrassing.
    • Everyone is bored and seeing someone make a mistake is the first entertainment they've had in a while.
  • Inverted: Bob feeds a stray dog. Everyone stops to applaud him.
  • Subverted:
    • Bob slips and falls into a puddle. Everyone starts laughing... at a billboard.
    • Bob expects everyone to start laughing at his misfortune, but they actually react with concern and try to help him.
  • Double Subverted:
    • But then they notice Bob, and laugh at him instead.
    • The people faked being concerned for Bob - they immediately push him back down and laugh again.
    • Another group of people starts laughing at Bob.
  • Parodied: Bob has a stain on his shirt. The moment he covers it with his coat, everyone immediately stops laughing, but whenever he takes his coat off, the laughter starts again until he covers the shirt again.
  • Zig-Zagged: Bob slips and falls into a puddle. Several bystanders laugh, a couple others help him up.
  • Averted: No one reacts to Bob falling.
  • Enforced: "The audience won't know Bob did something embarrassing unless everyone else treats it as such."
  • Lampshaded: "Wow, it's like they've never seen someone fall over before."
  • Invoked: Alice shoves Bob over.
  • Exploited: Everyone is too busy laughing at Bob to notice the missile Emperor Evulz fired at them from the sky.
  • Defied: Bob walks carefully, making sure not to slip.
  • Discussed: "Watch out for that puddle, Bob. Everyone will have a field day if they see you fall in."
  • Conversed: "It's weird how when a character does something embarrassing, the other characters instantly see it and laugh. People fall over all the time, it's not comedy gold or anything."
