Basic Trope: Superpowers have widely varying usefulness.

  • Straight: Ted has the power to move things with his mind. Meanwhile, Andy has the Flying Brick set of Combo Platter Powers expected of a Superman Substitute.
  • Exaggerated: Andy has full-on Reality Warper powers while Ted has to make do with Mind over Matter.
  • Downplayed: Both Andy and Ted have Flying Brick superpowers, although Andy is stronger and more durable than Ted, and can fly at a faster rate than Ted.

  • Deconstructed:
    • Superpowers are judged at face-value, prioritizing flashy abilities and ignoring ones that either don't seem impressive at first glance or have more of a Mundane Utility.
    • Arrogance and overcockiness can turn people with even the most impressive powers into total chumps that can get blindsided and knocked out/killed.
    • People with seemingly impressive superpowers might fall victim to Unskilled, but Strong due to a lack of practice, lack of practical, pragmatic, or varied use When All You Have Is a Hammer… or Awesome, but Impractical due to overlooking serious drawbacks, things that could potentially bite the users at the worst moment.
  • Reconstructed:
