Go To

Basic Trope: A place that suddenly gets major influence and status in-story.

  • Straight: Kleintown, a rather small town with a very minor economical and political influence, becomes the centre of its responding region or the whole country of Troperitania overnight.
  • Exaggerated: A tiny place where nothing notable happened before somehow gets to be the capital of a Space-Filling Empire, One World Order, or even an Interstellar Empire.
  • Downplayed:
    • Averageburg, a not-so-small town housing a few important factories and holding marginal political prominence, gets to be a major city of Troperitania (though not a capital).
    • Aliens in Cardiff
  • Justified:
    • Kleintown undergoes a really big economic boom (due to Unobtanium mining, or a unique industry which happens to be in high demand), so its importance gradually grows.
    • Troperitania is at war with neighboring West-Uberwald, and the government moves to Kleintown because the actual capital is dangerously close to frontline or is already taken by enemy.
  • Inverted: The City is reduced to a Dying Town after a disaster, a massacre following its conquering or years of economic recession.
  • Subverted: It turns out that Kleintown had been a prominent city (or even the capital!) of Ancient Troperitania.
  • Double Subverted: That was a lie made up by amateur 'historians' who were taken seriously.

  • Parodied: ???
  • Zig Zagged: Kleintown becomes a provisional capital and seat of the government during the war with West-Uberwald. But when the war (and restoration of the actual capital) is over, the authorities move back there. Soon, however, when Unobtanium is found near Kleintown...
  • Averted: Kleintown has always been a major city, or has never been.
  • Enforced: Author Appeal and/or Creator Provincialism.
  • Lampshaded: "It's like this place sprouted up like a weed overnight."
  • Invoked: ???
  • Exploited: ???
  • Defied: ???
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: ???

Did you also notice how greatly your quite sleepy hometown changed while you were away?

How well does it match the trope?
