Playing With / Stout Strength

Go To

Basic Trope: A character is strong despite appearing out of shape.

  • Straight: Alice is fat, but she's able to throw and destroy cars with ease.
  • Exaggerated: Alice is morbidly obese, but she wields enough physical power to move planetary bodies.
  • Downplayed: Alice is slightly chubby and while she's far from the strongest character in the story, she's still leagues above the average man.
  • Justified:
    • Alice does a lot of intense exercises and consumes massive meals afterwards.
    • Advertisement:
    • Alice either is or has the dna of a strong and bulky animal like a gorilla, bear or elephant.
    • Alice has Super Strength as a latent power. Her overweight body came about due to an addiction to junk food.
    • Alice used to be something like a wrestler or lumberjack in the past and while she's let herself go, her muscles are still there.
  • Inverted: Despite being rail thin, Alice hits like a truck.
  • Subverted: People talk about Alice's strength, but she does nothing to show it off.
  • Double Subverted: Until a vending machine nearly falls on Charles and she catches it with one arm.
  • Parodied: Alice's usual method of attack is to roll over her enemies
  • Zig Zagged: ???
  • Averted: Alice is fat... And that's about it.
  • Enforced: "Not all overweight characters are weaklings".
  • Lampshaded:
    • "Don't let that pot belly fool you. Alice hits like a truck!"
    • Advertisement:
    • "you won't be making fun of my girth when I pound you into the ground!
  • Invoked:
  • Exploited: ???
  • Defied: Alice does her best to avoid becoming overweight.
  • Discussed: "If Alice is so strong, why does she look like a human pig?"
  • Conversed: ???
  • Deconstructed:
    • For all her power, Alice often runs out of breath and suffers from heart problems.
    • For all her strength, Alice's bulk slows her to a crawl, so she often struggles against much more agile foes.
  • Reconstructed:
    • Alice starts exercising more and takes up a healthier diet to end her health problems.
    • Alice opts to lose weight and/or work on her leg muscles so she can be quicker.
