Basic Trope: A character whose mind is split into multiple different personalities.

  • Straight: Lucy has an alternate personality named Alice.
  • Exaggerated:
    • Lucy has 50 alternate personalities.
    • All of Lucy's alternate personalities have different names, gender, age, etc.
    • Lucy's alternate personality gains its own body.
  • Downplayed: Lucy shifts between two separate moods every week.
  • Justified: Lucy has developed Dissociative Identity Disorder. Trauma optional.
  • Inverted:
  • Subverted: It looks like Lucy has a split personality but turns out she was just pretending.
  • Double Subverted: However in the future, she does end up developing one.
  • Parodied: Lucy switches between personalities every 15 seconds.
  • Zig Zagged: At first, Lucy pretends to have a second personality who is timid and all but unable to speak, but she was lying about it to gain attention. However after some major physical and psychological trauma, she seems to actually develop a split personality; a nice but loud personality, and one which is quieter and timid. Except it isn't really a split personality, it's trauma which causes her to be timid, and her personality shifted due to her realizing how awful she had been to others rather than her having brain damage.
  • Averted: Lucy doesn't have an alternate personality.
  • Enforced: ???
  • Implied: Lucy acts like a different person from scene to scene, but it's never made clear if she has a Split Personality or if she is just a Mood-Swinger.
  • Lampshaded: ???
  • Invoked: Professor Evilz uses Mind Rape on Lucy, hoping to break her mind and create a new personality.
  • Exploited: Professor Evilz is chummy with one of Lucy's personalities, and thus does not want to harm Lucy physically, or mentally.
  • Defied: Lucy takes medication, or alternatively goes to therapy to get better.
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: ???
  • Deconstructed:
    • Lucy and Alice suffer from identity crises.
    • Lucy has memory loss whenever Alice emerges, which results in serious disorientation and fear.
    • Alice split off to deal with Lucy's trauma, and holds some resentment because of all she had to go through.
    • It's revealed that Alice is the real, original person and Lucy is actually the Split Personality.
  • Reconstructed:
    • Lucy and Alice figure out that the other exists, are able to establish communications (perhaps by leaving notes for each other to read whenever a switch occurs), and are eventually able to come to an amicable relationship.
    • Alice and Lucy decide that it doesn't really matter who is the "original" person, as both of them deserve to live as full a life as they can under the circumstances.
  • Played for Laughs: Alice and Lucy bicker Like an Old Married Couple.
  • Played for Horror: Enemy Within, if she does horrific things.
