Basic Trope: A website, usually containing a picture or video, whose entire purpose is to shock and offend.

  • Straight: The website contains a picture or video of an old, obese couple having sex.
  • Exaggerated:
  • Downplayed:
  • Justified:
  • Inverted: The picture on the website is that of an adorable baby with a litter of kittens. Nothing bad, and you'll probably want to save this picture.
  • Subverted:
    • The picture on the website is a famous celebrity.
    • The picture/video has a filename or URL like MaggotsOnAFesteringWound.jpg, but is actually an adorable picture of a kitten frolicking in a field.
    • Rather than squick, the site exists to give a quick Mind Screw.
    • Rickroll
  • Double Subverted:
  • Parodied:
  • Zig Zagged: As mentioned above, the displayed picture goes from disgusting to harmless.
  • Averted: The website contains nothing that even the most hardcore Media Watchdog or Moral Guardians would object to, and nothing that even the guy/girl with the weakest stomach would find Squicky.
  • Enforced:
    • "Hey, you know what would get this website a lot of hits? Brazilian scat porn!"
    • The work is a mid-2000s period piece, and the writers are all millennials who distinctly remember either pranking their friends or getting pranked with Goatse and Meatspin and put in a scene involving that because it was a common prank at the time.
  • Lampshaded: "WHY THE HELL WOULD ANYONE WASTE THEIR TIME CREATING SOMETHING LIKE THIS?!?!?!"
  • Invoked: Someone creates a Shock Site hoping it'll become an internet sensation.
  • Exploited: Someone is sure that the link forwarded to him is a shock site, so he sends it to an enemy.
  • Defied: Site owners deliberately remove any and all adult content from their webpages.
  • Discussed: "So, have you heard about [insert URL here]?"
  • Conversed: "Yeah. It's disgusting. Can we talk about something else?"
  • Implied:
    • Someone is seen clicking on a page and afterwards vomiting, screaming and going for the Brain Bleach.
    • Someone is seen posting a link with an innocuous title on a message board, and receives a notice that their account has been banned moments later.
  • Deconstructed: These websites tend to be Nightmare Fuel and Fan Disservice for most people, featuring a lot of illegal content. As a result, site owners find themselves getting prosecuted at an alarming rate, which leads to many of these sites getting shut down.
  • Reconstructed: No Such Thing as Bad Publicity: The websites begin to operate in countries where shock sites are protected by law, allowing them to continue to provide lulz for Trolls and Squick for everyone else.
  • Plotted A Good Waste: The site does contain pictures of old, obese couples having sex, but only because it's either 1) a porn site catering to that particular fetish and/or 2) produced by the one of the couples in said photos.
  • Wasted A Perfectly Good Plot: A truly terrifying picture is created, full of nightmarish symbolism and complex Fridge Horror, with a deep, engaging creepypasta story behind it. Everyone just uses it as a shock site.
  • Played For Laughs: Someone creates one with a picture that seems disgusting, but only if you don't know exactly what it is (i.e. the horribly injured man is actually covered in tomato sauce and stuff that look like gashes and organs).
  • Played For Drama:
