Basic Trope: Synthetic lifeforms created through a form of magic or science.

  • Straight: Bob is a vaguely humanoid entity created by an alchemist.
  • Exaggerated: Bob is an Eldritch Abomination made by a collective of alchemists.
  • Downplayed: Bob is a small, imperfect being that needs to be supplied mana to survive.
  • Justified: Homunculi is a general term used to refer to any artificially made being, with magic being potent enough to allow a variety of lifeforms.
  • Inverted: Artificially created beings design a vastly less variable race called Humans.
  • Subverted: Bob appears to be a homunculus, but he's actually just a deformed human faithfully loyal to his mistress Alice.
  • Double Subverted: ...The unnaturally beautiful Alice however is indeed a homunculus.
  • Parodied: Every single living thing in the story is a homunculus. Several characters start to wonder who made them all in the first place
  • Zig Zagged: Bob appears to be a homunculus, but is actually just a deformed human. His unnaturally beautiful mistress Alice is considered to one instead, except she's actually a demi-goddess. Their pet dragon however...
  • Averted: Synthetic lifeforms either can't be made, or they all have a uniform "species".
  • Enforced: "Its difficult coming up with new species names and lore. Hey, what if we say they're homunculi instead?"
  • Lampshaded: "Wait, how is a vaguely human individual and a tentacled cat thing the same type of being?"
  • Invoked: Bob labels all his creations as homunculi to reinforce that they're both unique individuals and yet similar beings.
  • Exploited: Emperor Evulz brings the term homunculi into common usage so everyone would see the artificial beings as one easily replaced race, thus making them more okay with the murder of homunculi.
  • Defied: "Please, calling my creations Homunculi? I rather they be truly seen as unique beings, thus I'll even give them their own racial name. Now, what should the racial name be?..."
  • Discussed: "I've always wondered why we call things like tube contained shadows and pretty artificial beings the same thing." "Well, their base nature is ultimately the same after all, so it makes sense."
  • Conversed: "Its so uncreative that Homunculi is the default term for artificial beings." "Well, it surely can't be easy coming up with racial names for each homunculus, and perhaps the point of some of those characters is that there's so few. Thus making them into a species beats the whole point."
  • Implied: Bob, a non-mage who hangs out with magic users, always manages to set off magic detectors even when he hasn't been with his friends for a while.
  • Deconstructed: The variety of Homunculi yet having only one term causes people to view them as lesser beings, killing homunculi without regret "because we can just make a replacement".
  • Reconstructed: Though the variety of Homunculi gets them viewed as lesser beings, they're nonetheless treated with great value and thus new Homunculi are custom built to fulfill specific objectives.
  • Played For Laughs: Bob, physically resembling a clown, uses other homunculi to perform his clown acts.
  • Played For Drama: Bob, only understood and respected by his creator, joins them in death when it becomes clear there's nothing for him in the world.
