Basic Trope: The cared-for character becomes the caretaker.

  • Straight: Bob always protects Alice from danger. Then Bob is felled by an opponent and Alice takes up his sword to defend him.
  • Exaggerated: Alice cannot even walk down the street without Bob, but when he's wounded, she takes out Emperor Evulz's entire army to protect him.
  • Downplayed: Bob usually scares away dogs for Alice; she scares away cats for him.
  • Justified: Bob is Nigh-Invulnerable and Alice is a Muggle; however, his one weakness is something that doesn't affect her.
  • Inverted: ???
  • Subverted: Alice takes up Bob's sword...and then drops it and runs away, crying about how she can't do it.
  • Double Subverted: ...But as Emperor Evulz raises his sword for the killing blow, she returns.
  • Parodied: ???
  • Zig Zagged: When Bob is wounded, Alice takes up his sword to defend him, but owing to inexperience, she's not very good and is soon at Emperor Evulz's mercy. Bob rises to defend her but is taken down again because of his wounds. Alice is too stunned to react. As Alice is about to despair, Evulz taunts her: "How loud do you think he'll scream?" Enraged, Alice grabs a nearby rock and knocks him out.
  • Averted: ???
  • Enforced: The executives don't want Alice to seem like The Load, so they give her a Moment of Awesome to compensate.
  • Lampshaded: "Awww...Bob's always saved Alice and now she's saving him."
  • Invoked: Emperor Evulz really wants to fight Alice, not Bob, so he injures Bob to draw her out.
  • Exploited: Emperor Evulz takes the opportunity to finish both of his enemies at once.
  • Defied: Bob seals the door so that Alice cannot come after him and get hurt.
  • Discussed: "Just remember, Alice, you owe Bob. If he gets in trouble..."
  • Conversed: "This is like a movie I saw last week! This Is the Part Where... Alice helps Bob like he's been helping her."
