Basic Trope: A seemingly relatively ordinary couple. But then one discovers that the other isn't human.
- Straight: Bob meets Alice at high school and they start dating. Then he finds out she's a Humanoid Alien.
- Exaggerated: Bob is the Victorious Childhood Friend of Alice, who's very plain and doesn't really have any standout characteristics. Despite dating her for a decade, he just recently found out that she has an even less attractive side.
- Downplayed: Alice is a member of a Mage Species, so she's mostly human, but a bit different.
- Justified: Alice's form has no clear difference from a normal human girl's. And whatever Alice really is, it isn't something common. So Bob has no reason to suspect that Alice may not be a human.
- Inverted:
- Bob is dating Alice and her behavior makes him suspect that there is something wrong with her. It turns out that Alice is normal, but Bob himself is the Ninja Pirate Zombie Robot.
- Alice is a regular human dating Bob, but Bob is a Mad Scientist who turns Alice more and more inhuman after she sleeps, until he finally reveals she isn't a human.
- Bob and Alice are Humanoid Aliens living on another planet and start dating, then Bob finds out Alice is a human in disguise.
- Subverted:
- Bob is dating Alice and her behavior makes him suspect that there is something wrong with her. It turns out that she's simply a Cosplay Otaku Girl with weird behavior.
- Bob is dating Alice who is a normal human who both loves and is in a relationship with Bob, but a shapeshifting non-human takes her place with a Bed Trick.
- Double Subverted:
- However, it's revealed later that Alice is unaware of her alien gene.
- Turns out Alice is also a shapeshifter
- Parodied: Alice is a Starfish Alien, yet Bob think she's human. He claims the poor girl simply has a severe case of deformation, and shouts angrily at anyone who tries to point out that humans do not have tentacles.
- Zig Zagged:
- Bob's girlfriend is Alice, who seems to be just a normal girl. Then she starts acting weird and Bob suspects her of being an alien. Turns out that she simply got into a weird cult. Bob tries to get her out of the cult, but she can't since the cultists claim she's their goddess. After some investigation, it turn out that goddess is merely a rank of the cultists. Except it's soon revealed that goddess rank cultists are candidates of those who bear the essence of the Goddess. It took a while before Bob can confirm that the whole Goddess thing is merely propaganda from the cult leader. When the cult leader sends assassins after him, however, Alice quickly repels them with alien technology and explains how she and her parents came from a distant world across the galaxy. Alice's parents soon tell Bob a secret, Alice is really just an Earthling girl they adopted when she was just a baby. Aside from knowledge of operating alien devices, there's nothing special about her at all.
- Bob is dating Alice who is a normal human at first, but is exposed to some chemicals that turn her into a monster who can shapeshift, she uses her regular human form to blend in with humans until she gathers the courage to show her lover Bob her true form.
- Bob is dating Alice and he eventually finds out she is not human, but Alice doesn't know it herself and thinks she is a regular human like Bob, and Bob keeps it a secret from Alice, because he loves her and for her safety, until it slips and Alice finds out about her non-human nature and Bob reveals what she truly is.
- Averted: Alice is a normal Earthling girl.
- Lampshaded: "I finally meet the right girl, and she's from another planet!"
- Invoked: ???
- Exploited: ???
- Defied: To avoid drama, Alice doesn't date Earth men.
- Discussed: ???
- Conversed: "Five bucks says the guy in this movie hooks up with the alien in disguise."
- Deconstructed: The Reveal is too much for Bob and he runs away from Alice...or even Goes Mad From The Revelation.
- Reconstructed: But after taking some time to think about it, Bob has come to the conclusion that aside from being an alien, Alice is really the perfect girl for him. She's still the same cute girl who tries her best to please him. He quickly returns to her and mends the relationship.
