Basic Trope: Some places will not give service to "common" folk.
  • Straight: Alice always wanted to eat at Chez Trop-ay, but she knows she has to at least look like someone noteworthy, so she puts on her best evening dress, her most glittering jewelry, and borrow her aunt's dark sable wrap. She has little trouble finding a table.
  • Exaggerated: Alice is a movie star, but every flop means she's basically blacklisted from that place until another hit.
  • Downplayed:
    • Alice just has to wait an hour or so when she comes there dressed only moderately fancy.
    • Alice just has to wear at least one gold object, and she'll be let in regardless of any other factors.
  • Justified:
    • The owner has tried running several diners, and this is the only one that lasted, due to catering to the most lucrative clientele.
    • Chez Trop-ay is located in Beverly Hills.
  • Inverted:
  • Subverted: It looks like the place won't let Alice in, but the waiter says there is a table.
  • Double Subverted: It's the smallest one there, and it takes nearly three hours before the waiter even asks what appetizer she wants.
  • Parodied: There is a "You must be this famous to dine" meter near the door.
  • Zig Zagged: The food Alice can order is restricted based on her social status—the richer, more famous she is, the more of the menu is available for her to order from.
  • Averted: The place serves anyone who can afford the food.
  • Enforced: The producer had a bad experience at this kind of place.
  • Lampshaded: Chez Trop-ay has a sign out front that says. "We hate having customers."
  • Invoked: ???
  • Exploited: Alice knows that everyone wanting to get in will recognize her, and fawn over her, and she loves that attention.
  • Defied: The new manager knows the town is full of people who can give them money just as well as any celebrity, so loosens the policy on who gets good treatment.
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: ???
  • Deconstructed: All of the exclusivity in the world does you little good if you don't actually let any of those customers in. The wealthy customers still don't spend enough to justify keeping it over. Chez Trop-ay goes out of business fast.
  • Played For Horror: Guess what happens to the people turned away at the door.
  • Implied: When trying to suggest restaurants, Alice scoffs at the mention of Chez Trop-ay with "showing up would be a waste of time".
