Basic Trope: Characters in a commercial are single-mindedly obsessed with the product being advertised, and will do anything to get it or keep it.

  • Straight: In an ad for Bland Name Greek yogurt, Alice sees the last container of it in the dairy aisle...and so does Betty. The two women look at each other threateningly, then race their grocery carts down to where it's located, and are seen having a tug-of-war with it. Their small children witness this and are appalled at their moms' behavior.
  • Advertisement:
  • Exaggerated: Alice, Betty, and several other women fight to the death over the yogurt. When the dust clears, Alice (who now has a black eye and whose clothes are now tattered and covered in blood) climbs over dead and bloodied bodies, victoriously holding up the yogurt, then continues merrily with her grocery shopping as though nothing out of the ordinary happened.
Intercom: Cleanup in the dairy aisle.
  • Downplayed: Bob tries to put the moves on Alice. Alice smiles at him, winks, and...picks up her yogurt and walks into the other room. Bob looks disappointed.
  • Justified:
    • Bland Name Greek Yogurt is laced with a powerful addictive drug.
    • It is just so delicious that its effects are indistinguishable from an addictive drug.
    • In this setting, good quality Greek yogurt has become extremely rare and so valued that it has become the stuff of myths. An eccentric billionaire has promised a vast fortune to anyone who can find fresh Greek yogurt and give it to him, and to that extent, many people roam the lands looking for some.
  • Inverted:
      Advertisement:
    • Alice walks past several tubs of Bland Name Greek Yogurt, and drives home past several billboards and signs advertising the very same product, not seeming to notice or care about them.
    • Fights break out over every brand of Greek yogurt, except Bland Name Greek Yogurt, the advertised product in question.
  • Subverted:
  • Double Subverted:
  • Parodied:
      Advertisement:
    • Betty brings up the yogurt at some inappropriate occasion. Alice and others yell at her to "Shut the hell up about that goddamned yogurt!" Betty shrinks back and never brings it up again.
    • Betty and Alice find themselves in Greek yogurt rehab after the police come by and observe what had transpired in the supermarket.
  • Zig Zagged: Some people are obsessed with the yogurt, some don't care about it at all, and some like it but aren't about to fight over it or anything.
  • Averted: The product is never seen or mentioned even once.
  • Enforced: "We need people to buy our product."
  • Lampshaded: "Bland Name Greek Yogurt. It's worth it."
  • Invoked: Alice and Betty are both headed for the last container of Bland Name Greek Yogurt available at the supermarket.
  • Exploited: A year's supply of the yogurt is a prize in a contest or competition, most likely sponsored by the company that makes it.
  • Defied: At the grocery store, Alice lets Betty have the last container of the yogurt, and either buys a different brand or makes a note to get it elsewhere.
  • Discussed: "Fighting over a little container of yogurt...really?"
  • Conversed: ???
