Basic Trope: A projectile launcher that uses magnetic fields instead of explosive force for propulsion.

  • Straight: In the game Gun Worlds, one of the defenses available is a "Gauss Cannon."
  • Exaggerated: The maxed-out Gauss Cannon uses the magnetic field of a neutron star in order to launch iron-rich asteroids at the enemies.
  • Downplayed: The Gauss Cannon is aided by magnetic fields, but also uses chemical propulsion.
  • Justified: The game Gun Worlds takes place far enough into the future that the Gauss Cannon is viable enough for military use.
  • Inverted:
    • One of the available weapons is the "Gauss Funnel", which uses magnets to pull in opponents.
    • The game's melee weapon is the "Gauss Mallet", a blunt Vibroweapon accelerated by magnetic fields.
  • Subverted: The Gauss Cannon doesn't behave much like a magnetic weapon, the weapon fires recolored plasma bursts and its description states that it "fires balls of superheated gas using electromotive force".
  • Double Subverted: ... until Patch 1.2 comes out, which fixes the Gauss Cannon's description and projectiles.
  • Parodied: The Gauss Cannon fires statues of Carl Friedrich Gauss.
  • Zig-Zagged: The Gauss Cannon doesn't actually use magnets in the game Gun Worlds, until an update fixes it, except that gets changed the more you upgrade it so it more resembles Hollywood Magnetism than an actual railgun, but some argue that it's still technically a Gauss Cannon, but others disagree...
  • Averted: There is no Gauss Cannon in the game.
  • Enforced: "There aren't enough types of gun in this game to call it Gun Worlds; we need a Gauss Cannon!"
  • Lampshaded: "Finally, a Magnetic Weapon."
  • Invoked: The Player puts points into Magnetics, certain it'll unlock some kind of railgun sooner.
  • Exploited:
  • Defied: The Gauss Cannon's rails are sabotaged so that it explodes upon use.
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: ???
