Basic Trope: A girl plays with her dolls because she has no friends.

  • Straight: Carol is lonely and has no friends, so she plays with her dolls.
  • Exaggerated: Carol doesn't interact with anyone except for her massive doll collection.
  • Downplayed: Carol plays with her dolls when she feels lonely, but she isn't always lonely, she has friends at her side.
  • Justified:
    • Carol comes from a rich and conceited family. Her snobbish mother Alice won't let her play with the neighbourhood kids as she considers them beneath her daughter, but can afford to buy her plenty of dolls.

    • Carol is chronically shy but still craves human contact. Dolls are a substitute she finds easier to deal with than approaching real people.
  • Inverted: Carol plays with her dolls when she hangs out with her friends.
  • Subverted: Carol plays with her dolls, but she feels fine, as she has friends at her side.
  • Double Subverted: ... But those friends are imaginary.
  • Parodied: Carol is a literal porcelain doll that is obsessed with her dolls.
  • Zig Zagged: Carol plays with her dolls and feels lonely, despite having friends, but those friends are imaginary, however, she isn't really lonely, she's just faking it to get sympathy from people, so she can make some friends.
  • Averted: ???
  • Enforced: "Let's make Carol the lonely doll girl so she appeals to the audience with her Moe cuteness."
  • Lampshaded: ???
  • Invoked: ???
