Go To

Basic Trope: Two characters are about to have sex, but someone interrupts.

  • Straight: Alice and Bob are about to have sex, but right as they're getting undressed, Charles walks in.
  • Exaggerated:
  • Downplayed:
    • Alice and Bob are already in the act when Charles knocks on the door.
    • Alice and Bob were about to kiss or something similar when Charles walks in.
  • Justified:
    • Alice and Bob often forget to lock their door, and Charles often forgets to knock.
    • For some reason, Alice and Bob's room doesn't have a lock.
  • Inverted: Alice and Bob weren't considering having sex, but Charles walks in and they start getting it on.
  • Subverted:
    • Charles walks in the room. Alice and Bob look at him, then decide to get it on anyway.
    • Charles walks into the room ... because he's the third party in their threesome.
    • Charles is about to enter the room while things get steamy between Alice and Bob, but for whatever reason he walks away.
    • Charles comes in when Alice and Bob are together and at least one of them is naked, but they aren't planning on making love.
  • Double Subverted:
    • But after it gets too awkward, they decide to stop.
    • But then, for whatever reason
    • In fact, they are and they just said they weren't because their relationship is discouraged.
  • Parodied:
    • Alice and Bob go out to the farthest reaches of space, or even back in time before the dawn of man to have sex, and someone still walks in on them.
    • Alice and Bob are at an orgy, where openness is expected, but they still get squicked out when other people watch them have sex.
    • Alice and Bob only see Charles when they're about to have sex, and at no other time.
  • Zig-Zagged: Sometimes Charles interrupts Alice and Bob when they're going to have sex, sometimes he doesn't.
  • Averted: Alice and Bob have sex with no interruptions.
  • Enforced: The show isn't allowed to add an actual sex scene, but a Sexy Discretion Shot wouldn't make sense in the story for some reason, so instead they just have the characters be interrupted before they can do anything.
  • Lampshaded: "Dude, right now? Can't it wait until later? We're kinda busy."
  • Invoked: Charles is extremely jealous of Alice and Bob's relationship, so he interrupts sex as much as he can to make them frustrated.
  • Exploited: Being sick of Charles always barging in at the worst time, the couple sets the stage for Charles to interrupt their alone time again, only this time, they go on with their loving to scar Charles and teach him how to knock.
  • Defied:
    • Charles walks in. Bob then escorts him out and gets back to having sex with Alice.
    • Charles realizes that now is probably not the best time to talk to Alice and Bob, and decides to wait until later.
  • Discussed: "You didn't hear it from me, but their sex life isn't that great. Of course, it's not like they don't try, but they just keep getting interrupted!"
  • Conversed: "Poor guys. I'd wanna kick Charles' ass if he did that."
  • Implied: Charles knocks on the door. Alice and Bob walk out, half-dressed and looking pissed.
  • Played for Laughs: It's a Running Gag for a person, animal, force of nature, or thing to interrupt Alice and Bob when they're making love.
  • Played for Drama:
    • Alice and Bob's relationship eventually sours because they can't have any time to themselves.
    • Alice and Bob's relationship is not a socially accepted one, and they are in no position to ask for privacy.
  • Deconstructed: Bob and Alice are in an Adam and Eve Plot, unknown to everyone else.

Oh wow, looks like I walked in at the wrong time! I'll just let you folks get back to it and head on back to Interrupted Intimacy.
