Playing With / Hide Your Children

Go To

Basic Trope: Children are nowhere to be seen.

  • Straight: While children are present in a game setting, they are never encountered while playing.
  • Exaggerated:
    • No children are seen even though the setting is a school, during school hours, where logically children should be present.
    • Childless Dystopia
  • Downplayed:
    • Older children are still present, but babies are never seen.
    • Children occasionally appear in cutscenes, but never in gameplay.
  • Justified:
    • All the children are hiding in a place the player can't get to.
    • There was a Sterility Plague, and no children have been born for many years.
  • Inverted:
    • There Are No Adults
    • Children appear frequently in places where you wouldn't expect there to be children, merely to serve as target practice for the player.
  • Subverted: Though there are no children present in the first part of the story, several appear later on.
  • Double Subverted: But they're not actually children - they're adult aliens disguised as children!
  • Parodied: As soon as the potential for violence crops up, all the children magically cease to exist.
  • Zig Zagged: There initially appears to be no children around. Then some show up, only they're not children but aliens in disguise. You later find out that despite looking like adults, they are actually the alien's equivalent of children. Finally it's revealed that the entire encounter was a hallucination and the alien children never actually existed, and you encounter no actual children.

  • Averted: Children are present and can be interacted with.
  • Enforced: Due to the taboo against children being harmed, the developers included no children in their game for fear of backlash.
  • Lampshaded: "I'm glad there's no kids around to see this."
  • Invoked: The authorities have hidden the children in a safe location to stop the mass-murdering protagonist from getting to them.
  • Exploited: ???
  • Defied: The murderous protagonist attempts to catch the children before they can be hidden, just so he can enjoy killing them.
  • Discussed: "What have you done with my children?!" "They've been taken to a safe, hidden location ma'am, until all of this blows over."
  • Conversed: "Hey, I just realised you pretty much never see kids in video games."
  • Deconstructed: The fact that the children are never around when violence happens makes them careless and prone to accidents.
  • Advertisement:
  • Reconstructed: But the children are all still alive and unscarred by the horrors of the events which happened. People are happier in the knowledge that their children are safe from harm.
