Basic Trope: A cynical character in a Sugar Bowl.

  • Straight: Bob believes that The Power of Love is useless and Humans Are Bastards even though he lives in a peaceful city.
  • Exaggerated: Bob is downright bitter and pessimistic in a world where everything and everyone is pleasant.
  • Downplayed: Bob is cynical in A World Half Full.
  • Justified:
    • Bob has been hurt in the past and became cynical to the point of outweighing the good with the bad.
    • Bob just moved to Cutopia and hasn't adjusted yet. He grew up in a much rougher neighborhood.
    • While everyone else in Cutopia has fun all the time, Bob is the Butt-Monkey who always gets injured to the laughter of others.
  • Inverted: Wide-Eyed Idealist.
  • Subverted: Bob only acts cynical because he thinks it makes him smarter, not because he actually thinks the world is miserable.
  • Double Subverted: Bob acts cynical for so long that he starts to believe it himself.
  • Parodied: ???
  • Zig Zagged: ???
  • Averted: The world is a Crapsack World and Bob's cynicism matches it.
  • Enforced: The author has no love for cynicism and wants to create Bob to reflect on that.
  • Lampshaded: "Will it ever kill you to take off those Jade-Colored Glasses?"
  • Invoked: A Straw Nihilist brainwashes Bob into thinking that thinking the world is a terrible place.
  • Exploited: ???
  • Defied: Bob accepts that the world isn't as bad as he thought.
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: ???
  • Deconstructed: Bob's grumpiness alienates everyone around him. This doesn't help that the community Bob lives in is full of people who are totally oblivious to his suffering and always dismiss it (not to mention they even enjoy it), thus making his grumpiness far more justified than before.
