Playing With / Foul Flower

Go To

Basic Trope: A flower portrayed as evil, usually by acting cute to deceive others.

  • Straight: Lilith the Lily lures in unsuspecting victims with a friendly smile, then chokes them to death with her roots.
  • Exaggerated: Lilith goes One-Winged Angel and transforms into a giant, demonic-looking lily.
  • Downplayed: Lilith the Lily is a jaded grump who despises being called "cute".
  • Justified: Lilith wants to corrupt everything innocent.
  • Inverted: Every plant is evil except for Lilith.
  • Subverted: Lilith lives in a world where many normally good things are evil, but she just so happens to be friendly.
  • Double Subverted: ...But that's just a story she made up to get people to trust her. She's actually no better than the other monsters.
  • Parodied: Lilith is a troll who throws pollen at people who are allergic to it.
  • Zig Zagged: Lilith can't seem to decide whether she wants to act cute or horrifying, and constantly switches between the two to confuse others.
  • Averted:
    • Lilith is genuinely sweet and innocent.
    • There are no sentient flowers, evil or otherwise.
  • Enforced: The creator only wants things that aren't usually evil to be villains in his story, in order to make it stand out.
  • Lampshaded: Bob observes that Lilith looks sweet and innocent, and deduces that this is all a ruse.
  • Invoked: Lilith is wilting, giving her a horrifying appearance.
  • Exploited: A character picks Lilith and gives her to his enemy, knowing she will attack him.
  • Defied: Lilith goes out of her way to be nice to others to prove that she is not this trope.
  • Discussed: "Don't be so paranoid. Just because this flower is sentient doesn't mean she's evil."
  • Conversed: "In creepy stories like this, sentient flowers are never good. They may try to trick you into thinking they are, but trust me, the moment you get close enough, they'll show their monstrous side."
  • Implied: All the plants nearby have been choked to death by what appear to be a flower's roots.
