Playing With / Fixed Damage Attack

Basic Trope: An attack that always does the same amount of damage to the target, regardless of its defences.

  • Straight: In the tabletop RPG The Tower of Tropes, the spell Precision Shot always does 50 damage to its victim, regardless of how strong or weak its defences are.
  • Exaggerated: Precision Shot also homes in on its target with perfect accuracy and pierces through solid materials, so it always does 50 damage to the target.
  • Downplayed: Precision Shot does 50 damage regardless of the target's defence, but that number can change if the target is weak or resistant to the attack's element.
  • Justified:
    • Precision Shot has the user use their Improbable Aiming Skills to shoot the target on an unarmoured part of their body.
    • Precision Shot uses specialized ammo that can pierce all armor, but it has to sacrifice damage potential in order to pierce said armor.
  • Inverted: The skill Bullet Barrage deals a completely random amount of damage per hit, and is affected even more than usual by any armour or elemental affinities the target has.
  • Subverted: Precision Shot can't pierce through extremely heavy armour, and can be weakened or negated by it.
  • Double Subverted: ...in its base form. A high-level user can pierce through all types of armour with it.
  • Zig-Zagged: ...but there are types of armour that can negate the magic used by Precision Shot entirely. It's unpredictable whether it'll actually do its fixed amount of damage, do a fixed amount less than that, or do nothing.
  • Averted: All of the game's attacks are affected by defences and elemental affinities.
  • Enforced: The game's original form was Nintendo Hard, due to the presence of a lot of enemies with insanely strong defensive stats. The editors added in a technique that can ignore armour to soften up the difficulty a little.
  • Lampshaded: "Oh, no, a Heavily Armored Mook! I'm soooo scared... NOT!" unleashes Precision Shot
  • Exploited: The players use Precision Shot to take down a Beef Gate that they weren't supposed to kill for a while, much to the game master's chagrin.
  • Defied: The Game Master bans use of Precision Shot in his game to make the players use other means to take down enemies with strong defences, instead of just ignoring them.
  • Discussed: "This spell's awesome! Now, we can defeat those Armored But Frail enemies with no problem at all!"
  • Conversed: "The designers of this game must not have cared about balance. Why would they give us access to Precision Shot, then send us after a bunch of enemies with strong armour that we can kill with no problem?
  • Deconstructed: Within the game's world, nobody bothers wearing armour when spells like Precision Shot exist that can just ignore it. Users of Precision Shot are feared.
  • Reconstructed: Despite its ability to ignore armour, Precision Shot's low base damage makes it less intimidating, and armour remains useful for other purposes, though the attack is still useful against it.
