Basic Trope: A character has a nickname that embarrasses them.
- Straight: Robert is embarrassed by his nickname "Mr. Lampshade Wearer".
- Exaggerated: Robert is so embarrassed by his nickname "Robert, the Guy Who Had Sex With a Chicken" that he breaks down screaming and crying whenever someone calls him that.
- Downplayed: Robert is a little bit annoyed by his nickname "Bob".
- Justified:
- He got the nickname through an event he found traumatizing or embarrassing.
- On a similar note, someone who abused him in the past may have called him by that name.
- Robert simply doesn't like the nickname.
- Inverted:
- Mr. Lampshade Wearer hates his real name.
- Robert was the one who came up with "Mr. Lampshade Wearer" and likes it despite everyone else finding it embarrassingly stupid.
- Subverted: Robert's rival, Kenny, calls him "Mr. Lampshade Wearer" to irritate him. Robert isn't bothered.
- Double Subverted: Then Kenny goes into the details of why Robert got the nickname, which makes Robert angry.
- Parodied: Robert is embarrassed by his nickname 'Embarrassing Nickname'.
- Zig-Zagged: Sometimes Robert hates his nickname, but sometimes he doesn't.
- Averted: Nobody has any nicknames they're bothered by.
- Enforced:
- Sometimes a good way to set up a Noodle Incident, if the explanation behind the nickname is never given.
- Robert is the Butt-Monkey and/or The Chew Toy, and this is another way to give him a problem.
- Lampshaded: "Aren't you Robert, the Guy Who-" "NO ONE CAN PROVE I DID THAT!"
- Invoked: One of Robert's bullies at school comes up with the nickname in order to annoy him.
- Exploited: Charlie repeatedly annoys Bob by telling him his nickname.
- Defied:
- Robert's friends are aware that his nickname bothers him, so they stop calling him that.
- Robert is going to stop being called that nickname even if he has to break the legs of every person in the world.
- Discussed: "I wonder how Robert got that nickname."
- Conversed: "Why do so many characters have embarrassing nicknames like that?"
- Deconstructed: Everyone Robert knows continues to call him by embarrassing nicknames, causing him to feel ostracized by them. He decides to stop being around them for this reason.
