Basic Trope: Rules set up that dictate how people are supposed to dress.
- Straight: Princess Alice's winter outfit consists of a robe of deep violet dyed velvet, white satin gloves up to her elbow, and a full length ermine petticoat. Countesses can't wear dye more expensive than red or blue, gloves longer than half their forearm, or fur finer than sable and miniver. Common born ladies, even rich ones, can't dye their dresses at all, must wear gloves no longer than their wrists, and wear fur no finer than rabbit.
- Exaggerated: The court dress rules, even for Alice, state what kind of earrings to wear, how many bracelets on the wrists and what kind, how many strands of pearls to wear around a ladies waist like a belt, the length of their necklaces, and the length of their fur-lined capes (which must be the same type and color as their fur petticoats).
- Downplayed: Alice doesn't mind what other ladies wear, even common women wearing ermine, as long as it's just white ermine, and not with the black tails.
- Justified: So many fights broke out among ladies upset at lower rank ladies dressing better, that this was the only way to avert this.
- Inverted: The animate clothes have rules for which people the are allowed to wear them.
- Subverted: Alice's herald announces a dress code, but then says to ignore what was just announced.
- Double Subverted: Then he announces a less strict (but not lenient) dress code. The first was just made harsher so the real one would look reasonable by comparison.
- Parodied: The rules change with the times, but then the rules and fashions shift so fast that now the court dress rules are like Calvinball.
- Zig Zagged: Some places obey them religiously, others ignore them altogether, some only bother with them for Dances and Balls and other formal occasions, others only lightly enforce them.
- Averted: The court lords and ladies dress how they feel.
- Enforced: The producer insists on this historical drama sticking to the Real Life dress rules of the king's court.
- Lampshaded: "Why does every court have rules about what you can and can't wear?"
- Invoked: Queen Carol sets up a dress code so her daughter can appear special
- Exploited: Alice uses the dress code to pretend to be of lower social status than she really is
- Defied: The court places official rules against implementing a dress code
- Discussed: "It's because the nobility want to sort out classy types from the Nouveau Riche."
- Conversed: "All royal courts in books I've rezd have rules about what you can and can't wear."
- Played For Laughs: It doesn't matter if this is mud wrestling. Alice has to wear bikini briefs in the ring, not a thong.
- Played For Horror: This is a Decadent Court, the kind where you will pay for breaking the rules.
- Implied: Alice enters court with her hands bare, and is only let back in wearing High-Class Gloves
- Deconstructed: Draconian dress codes result in the nobility holding their own parties with looser rules
- Reconstructed: Rules are quickly placed in to avoid upsets over rich non-nobles dressing better than nobility
- Played For Drama: Count Bob is booted from high society because of his flagrant disregard for the rules
