Basic Trope: The villain taunts the hero for demanding that they uphold a bargain they never had any intention of keeping.
- Straight: Bob, The Hero, has been blackmailed into a deal where he is to give the MacGuffin to Emperor Evulz in exchange for his little sister, Maybelle, whom Evulz has taken hostage. However, even though Bob willingly hands over the MacGuffin, Evulz declares he has no intention of releasing Maybelle, and mocks Bob for being naïve enough to believe that he would actually keep his word.

- Justified: ???
- Inverted:
- Bob tells Emperor Evulz that he'll surrender in exchange for Maybelle's safety, but when Evulz thinks Bob will give in to him, Bob attacks him while mocking him for actually believing that he'd ever bow down to his demands.
- Evulz mocks Bob for assuming that he wouldn't uphold his end of the bargain and being too skeptical.
- Subverted:
- Bob hands over the MacGuffin, and demands that Evulz upholds his end of the deal. Evulz, ruminates over it, just long enough for it to seem that he might go back on his promise, and then releases Maybelle without any further fuss as he answers "Why, yes. I gave my word after all."
- After handing over the MacGuffin, Evulz runs off with it in his grasp, neglecting his end of the bargain, all the while cackling all the way, before he grinds to a halt and realizes that the Magically-Binding Contract that he signed with Bob compels him to return Maybelle. Who's Laughing Now?
- Double Subverted: ...But as the freed Maybelle runs towards Bob, Evulz casually shoots her In the Back, as he cacklingly adds "...And you were a fool for ever trusting it!"
- Parodied: "NO! I will not give you your ice-cream back!"
- Zig Zagged: "Well, I gave my word, yes, that is true, but I am clearly a villain, but - wait. Hmm... Eh, sure, have her back. I don't remember why I needed her captured any-WAIT! I remember now! Nope, I'm not releas...wait a minute... AGH! I can't make my mind up! Hmm... Wait, where did Mabyelle go?... FUCK!" Cue the camera panning to Bob and Maybelle escaping the castle with the MacGuffin.
- Averted:
- Bob just shoots Emperor Evulz as he brags about not giving back Maybelle.
- Bob doesn't give back the MacGuffin, since he doesn't expect Emperor Evulz to keep his end of the bargain.

- Deconstructed: Emperor Evulz refusing to follow through on the deal comes back to bite him, as he realizes later, since he just placed a big target on himself by keeping Maybelle hostage. The only way he is able to avoid facing Bob's complete and utter wrath is to just let Maybelle go since he had what he wanted anyways.
