Playing With / Cutscene Boss

Go To

Basic Trope: The boss is defeated in a cutscene.

  • Straight: In Tales of Troperia, Bob fights his way through a castle, slashing through hundreds of mooks, and finally reaches the lair of Lord Evil. Instead of a typical battle, the game shows a cutscene of Bob throwing his sword and slaying Lord Evil.
  • Exaggerated: Every single battle Bob gets into, even against minor mooks, plays out in a cutscene.
  • Downplayed:
  • Justified:
    • Lord Evil is The Unfought.
    • Lord Evil is a Non-Action Big Bad who Bob badly outclasses in fighting strength. The "fight" is merely a formality.
    • Bob uses stealth to assassinate Lord Evil before he knows what hit him.
  • Inverted: Tales of Troperia is a Boss Game with only cutscenes in-between battles.
  • Subverted:
  • Double Subverted: The real battle lasts for a few moments with nothing happening, then goes back to a cutscene of Bob defeating Lord Evil.
    • The person who killed Lord Evil is defeated in a cutscene, too.
  • Parodied: The gameplay engine (or the cutscene itself) depicts Bob showing Lord Evil a video of how the battle would play out in a cutscene; then Lord Evil keels over defeated.
  • Zig Zagged: Bob fights Lord Evil like he does in a normal boss battle, but after bringing HP to zero, a cutscene plays him finishing the boss... just to reveal that Lord Evil still has two more forms, which are fought in traditional way aside from the finishing part where Bob deals a final blow for both forms in a cutscene.
  • Averted: Bob doesn't defeat any bosses in a cutscene.
  • Enforced:
  • Lampshaded: ???
  • Invoked: ???
  • Exploited: ???
  • Defied: ???
  • Discussed: "Hey, anyone else find it weird that Bob defeated Lord Evil by just throwing his sword at him? I mean, wasn't there supposed to be an epic final battle or something?"
  • Conversed: ???
