Basic Trope: A character fakes crying, usually to manipulate people.
- Straight: Alice cries in order to "convince" Bob to do what she wants.
- Exaggerated:
- Alice emits Ocular Gushers every time Bob doesn't do what she wants.
- Alice makes a big show of "holding back tears" before "finally breaking down".
- Downplayed:
- Alice sometimes uses crying to "encourage" people to do what she wants, but only when she really is sad/upset/etc, as opposed to just pretending to be so.
- Alice conceals the reason for her tears, she pretends to be empathetic when she really only feels sorry for herself.
- Justified: Alice desperately needed Bob to do what she wants, so she fakes crying
- Inverted: Alice pretends to be happy, with a "smile" that doesn't reach the eyes.
- Subverted: Alice really is sad.
- Double Subverted: ???
- Parodied: Alice's monotone "Boo hoo, wah!" somehow fools Bob.
- Zig-Zagged: ???
- Averted: ???
- Enforced: Due to the twist of Alice being a villain, every instance of her crying has to be retconned to feigned tears.
- Lampshaded: "You know Alice, if you keep on fake crying like that, nobody's going to believe you."
- Invoked: Charlie accuses Bob of "making Alice cry" as a subtle cue to start fake crying.
- Exploited: Charlie watches Bob fall for Alice's trick and realizes he is easy to manipulate.
- Defied: Alice knows that Bob would not care if she was crying for real, so she doesn't try to pretend.
- Discussed: ???
- Conversed: ???
